Renault Counts Down To Unveiling Of Alpine Concept At Le Mans 2015

Renault has in store for us all a “beautiful surprise” that the French automaker will reveal at the 2015 Le Mans 24 Hours race. This to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Alpine. Are we finally about to see the new production sports car?

Honestly, not much else is actually known about what will be revealed, but that has not quelled the chatter of speculation. Alpine was known for making sports cars and successful racers that had Renault engines typically mounted at the rear. In 1973, they were bought out by their engine supplier.

It is suspected that a near-production version of the 2012 Alpine A110-50 concept will ultimately what will be shown. Several sources say that the car (due to go on sale in 2016) will be pegged as a Porsche Boxster or Audi TT rival, emphasising lightness and agility to make the most of its purported mid-mounted Megane RS-derived 270hp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

That philosophy does put it in a similar box as the Alfa Romeo 4C, which also uses a relatively low displacement turbocharged motor and has rather compact dimensions.

We will have to wait another three days (from this time of publishing) to know, conclusively, what Renault has up its sleeve. If you are so inclined, you can keep watch of the countdown on the Alpine website here.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
