SPAD Enforcement Seizes Nine Uber, GrabCar Vehicles In Operation

A three-hour operation was conducted by SPAD enforcement on Wednesday, September 30th, that led to nine vehicles impounded for their use in private taxi and ridesharing apps.

According to The Malaysian Insider, the seized vehicles (one Uber and eight GrabCar) were confiscated in the operation carried out by 36 enforcement officers around Bangsar, Subang Jaya, Petaling Jaya, Pudu and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

Additionally, nine taxi drivers were also nabbed for being caught not using their meter while ferrying passengers.

The operation is another in an ongoing effort by SPAD to clamp down on illegal taxi and vehicle-for-hire drivers, one that began in October 2014.

Enforcement chief Datuk Che Hasni Che Ahmad said: “Private vehicles are not allowed to carry (paying) passengers. To date SPAD has seized 43 Uber and 89 GrabCar vehicles. We have caught 145 private vehicles-for-hire with daily operations to apprehend culprits,”

For their unlicensed ferrying, those caught can face fines of up to RM10,000 or a maximum jail time of one year, or both. Ride sharing service providers, on the other hand, could be handed a fine of up to RM100,000.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
