BMW E21

The first generation BMW 3 Series (E21) was launched in 1975 and was initially only built in two-door sedan body styles. The BMW E21 was initially launched in three models - the BMW 316, BMW 318 and BMW 320, all with M10 four-cylinder engines. The fuel-injected version of the 320, BMW 320i, was subsequently introduced at the end of 1975. Two new models were further introduced in 1977 with new M20 six-cylinder engines - the BMW 320/6 and BMW 323i. In 1980, the BMW 316 and the fuel-injected version, the 318i was launched. The BMW 315 was launched in 1981 as an economic version. The E21 series did not include the BMW M3. 


 

BMW E30

The second generation BMW 3 Series (E30) was launched in 1982 and is the first of the series to be produced in 4-door sedan body styles. The E30 was initially launched in four models - 316, 318i, 320i and 323i. The first diesel engine version of the 3 Series, the 324td was introduced in 1983. In 1985, the 323i model was replaced with the 325i and another diesel version, the 324d was introduced. The 316 was changed to the fuel-injected version, the 316i, in 1987. 


 

BMW E36

The third generation BMW 3 Series (E36) was introduced in 1990 in two models - 316i and 318i. The first diesel engine E36 was launched in 1991 as the 325td alongside two other petrol engines, the 320i and 325i. The BMW 323i and 328i models were further added in 1995 while the 325tds and 318tds were added in 1993 and 1994 respectively.

 


 

BMW E46

The fourth generation BMW 3 Series (E46) was launched in 1997 in five models - 318i, 320i, 323i, 328i and 320d. The 316i and 330d models were also introduced later in 1999. The E46 facelift was launched in 2002 whereby the 323i was replaced with the 325i and the 328i was replaced with the 330i. 

 


 

BMW E90    

The fifth generation BMW 3 Series (E90) was introduced in 2004 in a single model - BMW 330i. In 2005, seven models were subsequently introduced - 318i, 320i, 323i, 325i, 318d, 320d and 330d. The 320si, 335i, 325d and 335d were also additionally introduced in 2006. In 2007, the 316i and 328i were added into the 3 Series line-up. In 2008, the E90 facelift (LCI) version was launched which featured styling changes to the exterior and interior of the E90 models.

The F30 BMW 3 Series LCI (facelift) Malaysia was launched in 2015 in five variants - 318i Luxury, 320i Sport Line, 320i M Sport, 320d M Sport and 330i M Sport. BMW G20

The seventh, and most recent, BMW 3 Series (G20) was launched in Malaysia in 2019 in a single variant - the 330i M Sport variant. The base model, the 320i Sport, was later launched in 2020. The exterior receives a signature double kidney grille look which is connected to the headlights and U-shaped daytime running lights. The BMW 3 Series interior features horizontal designs with electroplated silver trim around the air vents, controls and centre console. The 330e plug-in hybrid variant was added to the line-up in 2020. Below are the engine specifications of the G20 BMW 3 Series models:

The G20 BMW 3 Series LCI (facelift) was launched in Malaysia in three variants - 320i, 330i and 330e, all in M Sport trim. The 330Li M Sport and M340i variants were later added as well. The G20 BMW 3 Series LCI exterior changes include new headlamps with boomerang-like daytime running lights. No changes were made to the engine specifications. All variants come in the M Sport trim which includes M aerodynamics package in gloss black, Shadow Line trim, M badges on the sides, M entry sills, M pedals, sports seats, black headlining and M-specific instrument cluster display. The BMW 3 Series LCI interior is also fitted with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch central touchscreen with BMW Operating System 8.
