Chicago 2019: All-New Subaru Legacy Unveiled – Turbocharged Boxer Returns

Subaru has formally introduced its seventh-generation Subaru Legacy sedan at the ongoing 2019 Chicago Autoshow.

The company’s flagship sedan model is based on the Subaru Global Platform and boasts a stiffer and stronger structure (70 percent better front torsional rigidity, 100 percent better rear subframe rigidity) compared to its predecessor – courtesy of increased usage ultra-high-tensile-strength steel and structural adhesives in the body’s construction.

In another Subaru first, the Legacy utilizes a full inner frame construction in which the outer panels are welded to the structure only after the body frame is assembled, as opposed to the conventional process where upper and lower body sections are made independently and then joined.

Two engine options are available for the US market: a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated Boxer four-cylinder (which also powers the Forester) delivering 182 hp and 238 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. And for the first time since 2012, the Legacy sees the return of a turbocharged engine: a 2.4-litre turbocharged Boxer four-cylinder that develops 260 hp and 375 Nm of torque between 2,000 rpm and 4,800 rpm.

In both cases, the engine is paired with Subaru’s Lineartronic CVT-type transmission. The 2.4-liter turbocharged Boxer is claimed to reach 100 km/h from standstill in 6.1 seconds, while the 2.5-litre variant will take 8.4 seconds.

The suspension has also been updated with lighter and stronger components – featuring MacPherson struts with new internal rebound springs at the front and a double-wishbone rear setup. Hollow anti-roll bars measuring 23 mm and 19m are fitted at the front and rear respectively.

In terms of active safety, standard on all U.S. market variants is EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, now equipped for the first time with a Lane Centering Function. The Lane Centering function works with the Adaptive Cruise Control system to provide steering assistance. Additionally, the DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System, offered on selected variants, uses a dedicated camera and facial recognition software to identify signs of driver fatigue or distraction.

On the inside, the Legacy receives a tablet-style 11.6-inch Full HD multimedia display, the largest ever fitted to a Subaru, and offers direct touch controls for multimedia, HVAC and vehicle settings. The system is compatible with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Subaru’s proprietary Starlink connected services interface.

Premium variants will receive a Nappa leather interior, 10-way power front seats with lumbar support, ventilated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Legacy is offered with either 17- or 18-inch wheels depending on variant.

Subaru has also worked on improving refinement within the cabin; the Legacy is claimed to be 3 dB quieter than its predecessor thanks to additional weather stripping, and sound-insulated glass for the windscreen and front windows.

The Legacy goes on sale in the US starting Q4 of 2019.
