Paris 2016: Mercedes-Benz Generation EQ Concept - Daimler’s Electric Mobility Lifestyle Sub-Brand

Mercedes-Benz will be launching a series production electric-powered SUV latest by 2020. Previewed at the Paris Motor Show as the Generation EQ Concept, the upcoming electric drive SUV will be first of a several more series production electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, all of which will wear the EQ sub-brand.

Short for Electric Intelligence, the EQ brand refers to more than just a car. In the same way BMW’s i sub-brand encompasses not just the i3 and i8, but also the eco-system supporting electric mobility, Mercedes-Benz’s EQ brand will adorn all Mercedes-Benz related wallboxes, charging services, and home energy storage units.

"The new generation of electric vehicles will be based on an architecture developed specifically for battery-electric models, which is scalable in every respect and usable across all models. It is suitable for all model series as well as sub-models, such as SUVs, saloons and coupés. Wheelbase and track are variable", Prof. Dr Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development.

This all-wheel drive concept SUV has two electric motors, one at each axle, producing a total output of up to 300 kW (about 400 hp), depending on configuration. It has an electric drive range of up to 500 km.

To separate it from other regular Mercedes-Benz models, the upcoming EQ range of cars will have their own distinctive "electro-aesthetic" styling. This will include a new shape of radiator grille together with a new light signature. The interior, too, comes with the new "electro-aesthetic".

In the Generation EQ Concept, traditional controls and displays are replaced with simple, touch-based controls.

This is not the first time Daimler has introduced a sub-brand solely for electric drive vehicles. In China, the company already sells EVs under the Denza brand, but its limited only to China, and the rights to the brand are co-owned with China’s BYD Auto.
