Toyota Research Institute Donates $100,000 To Further Develop CARLA

Toyota Research Institute (TRI) has donated $100,000 to the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) to speed up the development of Car Learning to Act (CARLA), an open source automated driving simulator.

CARLA is hosted on Github, an open-source web-based hosting service. Development of CARLA is directed by the CVC at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) in Spain.

The non-profit, open-source automated driving simulator is for the development, training, and validation of automated urban driving systems. CARLA offers a range of environmental conditions and can be easily adapted and modified to suit individual project requirements.

With the $100,000 donation from TRI, CARLA’s team aims to expand it engineering team and improve the simulator’s capabilities.

Apart from CARLA, TRI has also made significant donations for two consecutive years to the Open Source Robotics Foundation (OSRF), which currently offers the global robotics community access to open source robotics software and development tools.

Elsewhere, the Darmstadt University of Technology in Germany and Intel Labs worked together on a project that used a combination of a Python script and a modified version of Grand Theft Auto V to teach an AI called Charles to drive around Los Santos.
