Vehicle Owners Urged To Remove Unapproved Headlights

Owners of vehicles fitted with non-approved after-market high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights are urged to remove them as the move to ban them will come into effect next year.

According to a report by The Star, Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sibu head Faizal David Jamil met Pelawan assemblyman David Wong at the Charity Without Borders event last week, and assured Wong that JPJ will fully enforce the law next year. Wong also said that the enforcement to ban non-approved after-market HID headlights are in line with the statement made by Transport Minister Anthony Loke a couple of weeks ago.

Those caught would face a RM2,000 fine or jailed for up to six months.

Wong added that the bright white light emitted from HID headlights are dangerous to other road users can it could case temporary blindness and possibly accidents. “I have experienced it a few times when my eyes were hurt by the flashing strong lights,” he added.

As for vehicles that come fitted with HID headlights from the factory, Wong advised owners to consult with JPJ for further clarification so that they won’t run foul with the law.
