Lebih Lebih »I used to own a 1995 Proton Wira 1.5GL, the car had been in my family since Day 1 back in mid-1995 and has been a rock solid performer for over 24 years. Daily driver, school runs, family trips, and even carrying furniture when moving houses - this car can do it all and has done it all with no complaints. Being extremely reliable, and very cheap to repair and maintain, it's little wonder then that the mighty Wira sits amongst the legends of the Malaysian car world. Today, this legendary car still plies our roads as hardcore daily drivers for many Malaysians and to many owners of the Wira, the longevity of the car is a source of pride. I am one of these people too, and I still love my old Wira - with all the newer technological advancements, there will never be another car like it again. What I came to realise though is that my family has changed significantly over the last 24 years. I am no longer in school, my parents are retired and we are more comfortable now than we were back in 1995. In short, it's time I moved on from my first love to a car that is more at par with where I am today and a car that can keep me safe - and that's when I created my account on Carlist.my. I wanted a car that I could genuinely feel happy with and be indicative of the progress I have made in life and the achievements that I have attained. I also wanted a car that would keep my family and I safe in the event of an accident. After doing a lot of searches on Carlist.my, saving various cars into my Carlist account, talking to friends, and looking through Owners Club pages in Facebook, it came down to either a Mercedes-Benz C-Class, BMW 3-Series, or an Audi A4 - the 3 big Germans in Malaysia. I ended up going for the Audi A4 as I felt that it looked better than the other two and the owners community is very active and helpful. I found a few 2015 Audi A4s on Carlist.my that appeared to tick all the right boxes, so I contacted the sellers, went for visits and test drives. A few weeks later I had found the one that I eventually bought and I'm very happy with the decision. I ended up getting a front-wheel drive 2015 Audi A4 1.8 TFSI from the facelifted B8 generation - or B8.5 as some call it. The car has a turbocharged 1.8litre EA888.3 (Gen 3) engine that produces 170HP and 320Nm torque - that's plenty of torque, it's positively a supercar compared to my old Wira! As those in the continenal car circles may know, the EA888 engine has somewhat of a poor track record in terms of reliability. The first generation (EA888.1) had a problem with timing chain tensioners that would fail causing the timing chain to become loose. This problem was made worse by a timing chain that stretched as time wore on. When the Volkswagen Group came up with the second generation (EA888.2), this problem was not fixed and this time around a new problem was introduced whereby new thinner piston rings caused engine oil to seep into the combustion chamber, causing engine oil consumption and blockages at the catalytic converter. All these problems though were finally addressed in the 2015 model year with the introduction of the third generation EA888.3 so if you get a car from 2015 onwards, you should be alright. The engine is mated to a 8-Speed CVT gearbox which Audi calls Multitronic. As far as CVT goes, this is probably the best there is in the market. The decision on whether or not you should get a CVT is largely based on personal driving preference. I was initially in the "Never CVT" camp until I did my first test drive of this A4 and while I'm not in the "Always CVT" camp now, I can say that I am pretty happy with this 8-Speed Multitronic box. There are some CVT specific characteristics that you need to get used to - for example, conventional automatics with torque converters always pull at the car when you are in D and have the brakes firmly pressed. This Audi Multitronic system on the other hand does not, when you touch the brake even slightly - it almost disengages the engine from the gearbox. So you can't creep along in traffic while still depressing your brakes like you can in a conventional auto, you instead need to let go of the brakes completely. But when you do, the car does not jerk forward like a conventional auto - the car sets of gently and gracefully, like Queen Victoria down the red carpet at her coronation. As a package, the EA888.3 engine, 8-Speed Multitronic gearbox, and Audi's superbly solid build quality creates a car that is powerful, quiet, and comfortable. The word I most often hear from people who experience an Audi for the first time is "smooth" and they are right, the acceleration is unlike any other car I've driven. I would say it most closely resembles an airplane at take-off where there is an constant uninterrupted surge of power that moves you forward ever faster. Before you realise it, you're already at the speed limit and craving for more! In my mind, the 2015 Audi A4 1.8 TFSI is a wonderful introduction for anybody who is interested in entering the continenal car world. It checks all of the right Germanic boxes - powerful, comfortable, and the most cliche of all - "solid". I don't think that my Audi would last as long as my Wira, but that's alright - I've come to accept that it's a fair trade between what I gain in safety, comfort, and performance and what I lose in super-longevity.
