The MINI Cooper Hatchback needs no introduction. Since its beginning more than 50 years ago, it has captured many, thanks due to its simplistic design and go kart-like handling characteristics. The current generation is no different than its predecessors, it still retains the iconic styling cues of classic MINI hatch as well as the much loved dynamics. MINI Malaysia sells the Cooper Hatch in three- and five-door layouts here with prices ranging between RM176, 888 (MINI Cooper Hatchback 1.5) and RM288, 888 for the range topping John Cooper Works version, which competes with models like the Volkswagen Golf R, Ford Focus ST, Renault Megane RS and Volkswagen Scirocco R.
The entry-level engine that you can opt for this British icon is a 1.5-litre inline-three cylinder petrol mill that outputs 136hp from 4,500rpm to 6,000rpm and 220Nm of torque from a low 1,250rpm. The more powerful S versions feature a 2.0-litre turbo four that is capable of producing 192hp and 280Nm of torque. Both cars utilise a six-speed auto 'box to transfer power to the wheels. Fuel consumption for the 1.5-litre three-door model is rated at 4.7-litres per 100km (0.3-litres more for the five-door version), while the 2.0-litre equipped variants consume 5.4-litres per 100km (0.1-litre more for the five-door version).
Powering the super-hot, range topping MINI Hatch John Cooper Works is a 2.0-litre TwinPower four-cylinder twin-scroll turbo engine which develops 231hp and 320Nm of torque (350Nm with the overboost function). A six-speed torque converter automatic is charged with delivering all that power to the front wheels, and help the two-door hatch dash to 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds; top speed is 246km/h.
