The 2018 Mitsubishi Triton faces very stiff competition from models like the Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Ford Ranger facelift and newly launched rivals such as the Nissan Navara and Toyota Hilux. Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia offers the Triton pick-up truck here in six variants, with prices starting from RM73,438, and all the way up to RM125,005 for the range-topping 2.4-litre VGT Adventure X.
The Triton range features two diesel engines, the 2.5-litre (4D56) common-rail turbo featured in the entry-level Quest and the mid-range 4x4 (MT) variant, and the new generation 2.4-litre (4N15) Variable Geometry Turbocharged (VGT) engine in the four most premium Mitsubishi Triton variants.
The 2.5-litre lump in entry-level, two-wheel drive Quest delivers 110ps and 200Nm, one step up, the 4x4 (MT) variant adds an intercooler to produce a more substantial 136ps and 324Nm. The four more premium variants (with the 'VGT' moniker) pack the company's 'MIVEC' variable valve timing and Variable Geometry Turbo diesel technology to deliver 181ps and 430Nm of torque.
A five-speed manual is offered in the entry-level Quest and 4x4 (MT) variants. The VGT (MT) variant receives a six-speed manual while the three VGT automatic models make do with a five-speed auto replete with Sports mode. An electronic 4WD selector is available in the four Triton VGT variants.
As the manual-only Quest is aimed towards people who are looking for a workhorse to haul stuff around, it only gets basic equipment such as halogen headlights, power adjustable side mirrors, a multi-information display with trip meter, a single DIN CD player with AUX and USB input and tilt adjustable steering column.
Upgrading to the more premium variants will buy you features such as automatic Bi-Xenon HID headlights with integrated LED daytime running lights,Push Start, Keyless Operation, Paddle Shifters, a touch screen infotainment system, a reverse camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, reverse sensors, leather upholstery and cruise-control.
When it comes to safety, all 2017 Mitsubishi Triton variants benefit from ABS, EBD, ISOFIX child seat anchor and two front airbags.
