BMW Concept M4 GTS Heads For Pebble Beach, Production Model Preview For US

Beastly, isn’t it? A concept for now, which will be previewed at the coming Monterey Car Week, but sadly, this one will be purely for sale in the US only. Bummer.

“While the BMW M4 Coupe embodies the ideal combination of motor sport genes and unrestricted everyday usability, the BMW Concept M4 GTS previews an emotionally powerful and exclusive special model conceived with an eye for trailblazing technology and a keen focus on the race track. Despite its outstanding track ability, it is still fully road-legal. This is racing technology for the road in the truest sense” - says Frank van Meel, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW M GmbH.

That should just about spell it all, but this Concept M4 GTS is rather special.

As mentioned, it’s a race car for the tracks that will be perfectly suited for the road. Continuing a tradition began by the M3 Evolution back in 1988, the Concept M4 GTS packs an abundance of tech that will soon make its way into the production version of the car that’s due to be revealed later this year.

The car is largely based and built upon the strengths of BMW’s M4 MotoGP Safety Car, featuring items like a manually-adjustable front splitter and rear wing, a Carbon-Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) hood, giant air intakes up front, and the same water-injection technology to boost power.

Although, the water-injection powered Concept M4 GTS here does make more power and torque. Here’s BMW’s explanation of how it all works:

“The water injection system introduced by BMW M GmbH sees the engineers using the physical effect of water when vaporizing to draw the required energy from the ambient medium. The water is injected into the plenums of the intake manifold as a fine spray. When water vaporizes and goes through its phase transition absorbs heat, cooling the air intake significantly. As a result, the final compression temperature in the combustion chamber – and therefore the engine’s tendency to “knock” – is reduced, enabling the turbocharged engine to use higher boost pressure and earlier injection timing.”

Riding on Michelin Sport Cup 2 rubbers, the Concept M4 GTS wears BMW’s light-alloy 666M styling wheels, featuring 19-inch sizes up front, and 20-inch in the rear.

The paint is a Frozen Dark Grey metallic scheme, with Acid Orange accents seen highlighting the car.

Pity, this beauty, which preview a real production model to come, will only be sold in the US sometime at the end of this year (2015).
