BMW Opens Brand-New R&D Centre In China

Following on from other announcements from their operations in China, BMW has also announced the opening of a brand-new R&D centre in Beijing's Shunyi District, located just outside Beijing's fifth ring road. It's part of their localization strategy as they plan to expand local innovation to further tailor their products to individual regions or markets.

With an area of 17,000 square metres, the new facility takes the latest and greatest standards of BMW corporate and design culture and creates a conducive environment for R&D and innovation, improving inter-team communication. There will be more than 200 employees working at this new centre, which makes for a total of 1,100 staff in the Chinese R&D network.

BMW's R&D presence in China continues to grow, making China the second largest presence for BMW R&D outside of Germany, as well as being highly unique. With the other R&D centres in China, there are now 70,000 square metres of facility, with two-thirds of the staff working in these facilities being Chinese. The new Beijing centre is to run 70 test vehicles in China, with a planned historical high of 5 million kilometres.
