Geneva 2018: Volkswagen I.D. VIZZION Has No Steering Wheel

Volkswagen will be premiering the latest addition to their range of I.D. all-electric vehicle portfolio, known as the I.D. VIZZION.

The I.D. VIZZION is a concept vehicle that takes a shape of a fastback sedan, measuring 5.11 meters - almost as long as a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Inside, the car gives users a completely new feeling of travelling as there is no steering wheel or visible controls.

This is the latest full-sized concept car that will not feature the steering wheel, after Audi unveiled their Aicon autonomous car and GM with their Cruise AV.

Other autonomous concept cars hide away their steering column, such as the Nissan IMx, as the driver controls (steering wheel and foot pedals) are still very much part of the global automobile regulations.

Designed and engineered as an autonomous vehicle from ground up, the I.D. VIZZION allows engineers to feature a ‘digital chauffeur’ with many assistance systems to assume control of the vehicle.

A virtual host, which passengers in their individual seats can communicate with via voice and gesture control, knows the personal preferences of the vehicle guests and adapts to each of them individually.

Providing power for the I.D. VIZZION are batteries with a collective output of 111 kWh which, together with regenerative braking, enables a driving range of up to 665 kilometres. The electric motors, with a system output of 306 PS, drive all four wheels of the concept car.

By 2025, Volkswagen plans to introduce more than 20 electric vehicle models with a sales target of one million EVs per year. This ambitious plan to be the market leader in electric mobility begins with the Golf-sized I.D. in late 2019 followed by the I.D. CROZZ SUV. The I.D. BUZZ spacious MPV, a re-interpretation of the legendary Volkswagen Microbus, is schedule for sale in 2022.
