Honda Develops New i-MMD For Small Cars, Replacing Jazz's i-DCD

Honda has confirmed that the all-new next generation Jazz will be available with a new, more compact i-MMD (Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive) hybrid system. Honda will debut the all-new Jazz at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show in October.

Compared to the current i-MMD hybrid system that is limited to larger vehicles, the new one is developed specifically for smaller models and the all-new Jazz will be the first model to receive it.

At the moment, the i-MMD hybrid system is found in larger Honda models, such as the Accord and CR-V.

In terms of functionality, the i-MMD hybrid system utilizes a two-motor system that operates without the need for a conventional automatic transmission.

As for the current Honda Jazz Hybrid, this model is fitted with the i-DCD (Intelligent Dual-Clutch Drive) Sport Hybrid system that features an electric motor housed inside the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Honda will also deploy the i-MMD hybrid system across its entire line-up, meaning that the i-DCD Sport Hybrid system will be axed in the future.

A shame really, as the Honda Jazz Hybrid offers an improved driving experience over the regular petrol variant. It remains to be seen if the new generation Jazz Hybrid will be as fun to drive as the current model.
