Honda Malaysia tops 2015 non-national sales charts

Honda sales in Malaysia grew by nearly a quarter from 2014 to 2015, the company closing its accounts last year with all-time sales of 94,902 units, making it the best-selling non-national brand in the country.

The record-breaking total achieved in 2015 was an impressive 22% leap from 77,485 units achieved in 2014. It is an astonishing total for a brand whose line-up consists solely of passenger cars.

Top contributor of sales was the City B-segment sedan, which accounted for 40% of Honda’s overall numbers. The HR-V and Jazz, themselves competing in the B-segment SUV and hatchback niches, follow in the City’s trail contributing 21% and 18% respectively to the company’s sales volumes. Each of the three vehicles were best-sellers of their respective segments.

Commenting on the company’s overall performance, Honda Malaysia Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Yoichiro Ueno said, “The year 2015 turned out to be an outstanding and memorable year for Honda Malaysia. We started off the year with a challenging sales target of 85,000 units.”

“We ended the year surpassing our target by 12% despite the tough and highly competitive market situation in 2015. In the month of December, Honda Malaysia also recorded the highest monthly sales in history with 10,741 units of vehicles sold,” Ueno continued.

Honda’s achievement in 2015 is unlikely to go unnoticed over at Toyota, and we can be certain of a response from the latter to regain the non-national sales crown that it has steadfastly held for many years.

Nevertheless, 2016 promises to be another exciting year for Honda Malaysia. We are anticipating minor updates for the Jazz and City, whilst the excellent Accord should be due for its midlife facelift. More exciting, perhaps, are slated introductions of the all-new BRV compact SUV as well as the tenth-generation Civic that will potentially be offered with Honda’s brand new 1.5-litre VTEC Turbo engine.
