Hyundai Ioniq Scores Highest In ASEAN NCAP. Toyota Rush Now 5 Stars

The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid has achieved the highest ever combined score of 91.98 in the ASEAN NCAP safety rating, earning it a 5-star rating.

The car obtained 46.34 points over 50 for Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 21.48 points over 25 for Child Occupant Protection (COP) and 24.17 points (highest score so far) over 25 for Safety Assist Technologies (SATs) category.

The inclusion of all the advanced driving assistance system (such as Lane Keeping Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking and Blind Spot Assist) in the Ioniq Plus variant is the reason for such a strong score in the SATs category.

The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid currently available in Malaysia and Singapore market is also fitted with seven airbags and rear seatbelt reminder.

ASEAN NCAP also tested two other Toyota models recently, the all-new Toyota Rush and Toyota C-HR. Back in 2015, the Toyota Rush managed a 4-star safety rating, albeit on a rather dated platform, with only two airbags, ABS and no Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

The All-New 2018 Toyota Rush that was recently launched in Indonesia now achieves a 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating, with a combined score of 84.03 points. The new Rush obtained 43.25 points for AOP, 21.33 points for COP and 19.44 points for SATs categories.

The model has made tremendous improvement by installing ESC and seatbelt reminders for frontal and rear passengers as standard fitment.

The Thailand-made Toyota C-HR meanwhile scored the highest ever AOP score recorded since the introduction of the new 2017-2020 rating system, with a score of 49.72 points over 50. With the fitment of advanced driving assistance systems for models destined for Thailand and Singapore, the C-HR scored very well in the SATs category, achieving 20.73 points.

The combined score for the Toyota C-HR is 91.31 points, just slightly lower than the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid.

Both Toyota crash-test assessments were performed at Japan’s JARI facility, while the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid model’s assessment was performed at the Korea Transportation Safety Authority (TS).

The release of the ASEAN NCAP latest crash test results was held in conjunction with the opening of the MIROS Gallery.

ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General, Ir. Dr. Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim also added, “ASEAN NCAP recently organized a Blind Spot Technology development test on some of the popular models currently available in the market. Based on this test, we have obtained significant results that the BST for Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid and Toyota C-HR have functioned according to ASEAN NCAP requirements for both the left and right side area of the vehicles in which they have detected the presence of the motorcycle rider in the blind spot zone,”

“Hence, subsequent to the crash tests that we performed recently, this is the first time we are releasing the results for our BST development test.”
