The Mazda 3 Bags The 2019 Red Dot “Best Of The Best” Design Award

The all-new Mazda 3 has bagged the “Red Dot: Best of the Best” award at this year's Red Dot product design awards. The Best of the Best accolade is awarded to products whose designs are considered genuinely ground-breaking and visionary.

The Mazda 3 joins is the seventh Red Dot prize to date for Mazda’s Kodo design models following the MX-5 RF (2017), the MX-5, CX-3, and Mazda2 (all 2015), (previous generation) Mazda3 (2014), and the Mazda6 (2013).

According to the Mazda 3’s Chief Designer Yasutake Tsuchida, the Mazda 3, the car’s design was inspired by “beauty through subtraction” – expressing the car’s aesthetics in a simple, single form. The designers eliminated character lines so that the body panels reflect the surroundings. The less-is-more approach applies throughout the car. Tsuchida notes that the purity of Mazda’s designs “can only be created by the human hands of our expert clay modellers”.

The international jury selected fewer than 100 products for the “Best of the Best” prize from more than 5,500 entries across 55 countries. Criteria for selection include innovation, functionality, ergonomics, and longevity. Mazda and the other winners will receive their awards on 8 July at the 2019 Red Dot award ceremony in Essen’s Aalto Theatre.

The all-new Mazda 3 was unveiled at last year’s Los Angeles Motor Show – along with new award-winning design, it sports the revolutionary Skyactiv-X powertrain utilizes compression ignition as opposed to regular spark ignition, which allows the engine to offer improved fuel efficiency and better engine response. The Skyactiv-X 2.0-litre engine believed to produce a healthy 178 hp and 222 Nm of torque.
