New 2017 Hyundai Sonata (LF Generation) Launched In Korea

Three years after its global debut, the current LF-generation Hyundai Sonata has been given a mid-lifecycle refresh following a rather lackluster performance in major markets like USA.

The main highlight of the new Sonata is its revised engine options, which now includes two turbocharged direct injection petrol engines – a 180 PS 1.6-litre T-GDI and a 245 PS 2.0-litre T-GDI, both paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. These T-GDI engines will only be available in certain markets. Australia and USA are on the list but there is no mention about its availability in other Asian markets like ours.

Currently, the outgoing pre-facelift Sonata LF sold in Malaysia is powered by a 154 PS 2.0-litre naturally aspirated port injection Nu MPI engine.

Other engine options for the new Sonata facelift include a 141 PS 1.7-litre variable geometry turbo diesel and a 163 PS naturally aspirated 2.0-litre CVVL.

From the outside, the new Sonata is differentiated by its new narrower headlamps, wider grille, and a new front bumper with vertical LED daytime running lights.

Behind, the boot now features a larger Hyundai logo and Sonata badge. The upper portion of the Hyundai badge doubles as a boot release button.

Inside, controls for the air-conditioning and audio have been revised with higher quality ‘piano key’ buttons. A 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard but some markets like Korea will receive a larger 8-inch screen with GPS Navigation.

The 2.0-litre T-GDI variants will also get a sportier flat-bottom steering wheel.

There are also additional USB charging port for rear passengers, and wireless smartphone charging is now available.

As for safety, the list of Advanced Driving Assistance features now includes Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist function, High Beam Assist, Dynamic Bending Lights, Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Currently on sale only in Korea, the new 2017 Hyundai Sonata facelift will be progressively launched in selected markets from mid-2017 onwards.
