Topless 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Revealed: Packing Up To 900Nm Of Torque!

Having teased the arrival of this classic revival recently, Mercedes-Benz has finally unveiled its latest iteration of the S-Class, the 2016 S-Class Cabriolet. The soft-top convertible features a three-layer roof that electronically stows away into the luggage compartment in a matter of 20 seconds, at speeds up to 60km/h.

Essentially an S-Class Coupe without the fixed metal roof, the new S-Class Cabriolet measures identically to its fixed-top sibling, at 5,027mm long, 1,899mm wide and 1,413mm tall – the cabrio is marginally taller because of its soft-top affair.

Two powertrain options will be put forwards by Mercedes-Benz at the S-Class cabrio’s launch, one being the S 500 and its 4.7-litre turbo V8 that delivers 455hp and 700Nm of torque, and the other, well that one’s a bit more special.

577hp and 900Nm of torque is what the mightier Mercedes-AMG S 63 version of the car will push out via its 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine, and its off-the-line speed to 100km/h of 3.9 seconds, courtesy of the 4MATIC all-wheel drive. As is the case for the hot AMGs, a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT-7 (multi-clutch technology) is called for duty.

Everything else you see in the S-Class cabrio is in the style of the regular S-Class Coupe, but for a new additional kit reserved strictly for the topless model.

Optionally, a special AIRCAP automatic wind protection system and an AIRSCARF neck-level heating system is available.

Mercedes-Benz explains that the AIRCAP system comprises of two key components, a wind deflector with a net, and an extendable draught-stop behind the rear seats. The purpose of these items is to reduce wind turbulence inside the cabin, and to prevent your hair from being thrown about from the top being down.

The AIRSCARF system is essentially a tool that “extends the convertible season,” says Benz, being that the heating for your neck allows for further topless travel in cold weather.

Standard kit for the S-Class cabrio is a THERMOTRONIC intelligent climate control feature which uses 12 sensors and 18 actuators to ensure each individual in the cabin is constantly and automatically treated to ideal climate conditions – the system can also detect solar radiation, and senses harmful air quality, and reacts accordingly to ensure a perfect climate for all.

Also setting a benchmark here is the car’s low drag resistance, clocking a Cd value of 0.29 – Benz tells us that this is a new benchmark in the segment.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet will make its full metal debut in a matter of weeks, at the coming Frankfurt Motor Show.
