Toyota Speeds Up Electrification Plans in China

Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) has announced that it is ramping up its electrification initiatives in China.

The brand declared that it will be rolling out an electric vehicle in China in 2020, and that it is conducting a feasibility study on fuel-cell commercial vehicles, namely buses to explore the potential usage of fuel cell technology in the country.

The announcements were made following the completion of Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing Company (TMEC)’s Hydrogen Station for fuel cell vehicles in Suzhou, near Shanghai, which is currently being tested under a three-year plan using two Mirai vehicles.

Toyota is also proceeding with demonstration tests of fuel-cell vehicles with Mirai in countries such as Australia, the U.A.E., and Canada, aiming to achieve a hydrogen-based society through verification under a range of environments.

"We will use the technology we have nurtured in hybrid electrification to carry out extensive development of new energy vehicles as required by China," said Toyota’s senior managing Officer and CEO of the China Region, Hiroji Onishi.

Speaking of hybrids, development of plug-in hybrid variants of the Corolla and Levin is also underway in preparation for their rollout in China.
