Chery Malaysia officially announced its return in mid-2023 with an official launch event in July of the same year. The company introduced the Chery Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs as their initial models to spearhead their local resurgence. The Omoda 5, positioned as a B-segment SUV to rival the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V, comes in two variants - the C variant of Chery Omoda 5 Malaysia price is at RM108,800 and the top-tier H variant available for the Cher Omoda 5 price of RM118,800. The exact meaning of the C and H designations remains uncertain.

In a departure from their previous strategy, Chery has chosen to re-enter the Malaysia market without a local partner with Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro, opting for an independent approach in a competitive market. To date, Chery confirmed the readiness of 31 dealerships to serve customers at the launch, with plans for more to open by the end of 2023 to date.

Notably, Chery has taken an aggressive approach by introducing both the Omoda 5 and Tiggo 8 Pro SUVs in completely knocked down (CKD), locally-assembled form right from the start. This is contrary to the common practice of initially launching fully imported cars followed by CKD units later.

The Malaysian version of Chery Omoda 5, with a distinctive design that might polarize opinions, aims to make a strong first impression in the B-segment SUV category. It features a sculpted shape with blacked-out rear pillars and a full-width strip for the tail, showcasing contemporary design elements. External differences between the C and H variants include red highlights on the front lower grille, side mirrors, lower doors, and rear spoiler of the high-spec H model.

Measuring 4,400 mm in length and 1,830 mm in width, the Omoda 5 is longer and wider than the Honda HR-V, suggesting a roomier cabin. The SUV is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine generating 156 hp and 230 Nm of torque, mated to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with nine virtual ratios.

Inside, the Omoda 5 features a dashboard with co-joined screens, resembling the trend popularized by Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX. The vehicle is well-equipped even in its lower C trim level, offering two 10.25-inch dashboard screens, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, wireless charging, ambient lighting, dual-zone air conditioning, a reverse camera, and more.

The H trim level adds additional features such as full faux leather upholstery, a sunroof with a manual sunshade, an eight-speaker Sony sound system, powered and ventilated front seats, and a powered tailgate. A comprehensive advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) pack is standard for both trim levels, including lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, adaptive cruise control, and automatic emergency braking.
