Toyota Thailand has launched the facelifted Toyota Yaris hatchback, roughly a month after the Yaris Ativ sedan model took centre stage. The Yaris hatchback slots in within the range in between sedan model and the updated Toyota Vios sedan, which is retailed as a more premium offering within the range.

Priced between THB479,000 (RM60,707) for the entry-level ‘J Eco’ variant and THB609,000 (RM77,183) for the ‘G’ variant. The B-Segment Yaris hatch goes up against rivals like the Honda Jazz and Mazda 2 hatchback in the Thai market. Although price wise, the Yaris sits midway between the (A-Segment) Honda Brio and Honda Jazz.

The 2017 Yaris hatchback. Like the Yaris Ativ entry-level sedan is not based on company’s new ‘TNGA’ global platform architecture. Instead, this new 2017 Yaris is actually a major facelift of the model first launched in Thailand in 2013. The sedan likewise, took its design cues from this hatchback model.

The most notable changes are the sharp looking front design, featuring slimmer headlights and a new bumper and grille design. The treatment applies to the rear end as well, with sleek looking taillights and a new bumper.

On the inside – the cabin is designed to improve on comfort levels and greater space for utility. As we progress through the variants - the ‘J’ variant (just above the J Eco) receives USB and AUX connectivity and some exterior enhancements. The ‘E’ variant adds ‘multifunction’ info display, Bluetooth and a 4-speaker stereo setup. The range topping ‘G’ variant is highlighted by LED DRLs and keyless entry.

Like the sedan, the Yaris hatchback also takes advantage of Thailand’s Eco-car tax scheme - powered by Toyota's small 1.2-litre 3NR-FE four-cylinder engine that produces 86 PS at 6,000 rpm and 108 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine is mated to a CVT automatic.

Safety kit is generous, like the sedan, the Yaris is also supplied with 7-airbags, Traction Control, VSC, and ABS with EBD across the range. It’s worth noting that while the Vios is more expensive than both the Yaris Ativ and hatchback models, it only offers a maximum of two airbags across the range.

The Yaris hatchback has been hugely successful for Toyota in Thailand, accumulating sales of over 150,000 units since its introduction in 2006.
