New BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance Revealed, Goes On Sale In 2019

Back in June, BMW unveiled the all-new G05 X5, the fourth iteration of its successful SUV lineup. Come 2019, the Munich-based firm will introduce a plug-in hybrid variant of the new X5.

Called the X5 xDrive45e iPerformance, the new variant features a 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo straight-6 paired to an electric motor for a combined system output of 394 hp. The internal combustion engine and electric motor deliver their power to an 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via BMW’s xDrive system.

The X5 xDrive45e is able to sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds. More impressive is the pure electric range of the new model, which is now roughly 80 km, almost tripling the amount of its predecessor. Additionally, the X5 xDrive45e can travel up to 140 km/h on pure electric power, an improvement from the 120 km/h of the previous generation F15 X5.

Being a plug-in hybrid also means that the combined fuel consumption is impressive, recording just 2.1 L/100 km, while emitting just 49 g/km of CO2.

BMW engineers have placed the high-voltage battery of the X5 xDrive45e into the underbody of the SUV, lowering the centre of gravity. Despite that, boot space is now 150 litres less than the regular petrol-powered models. With all seats up, boot space is 500 litres, expanded to 1716 litres with the back seats folded down.

As standard, the new BMW X5 xDrive45e is fitted with a two-axle air suspension and electronically-controlled dampers.

More details are expected to be known once the model goes official next year.
