A simple 2.0 litre four cylinder and 4 speed auto is something no unusual from the time period but unusual now. It's not the most efficient, not the most silent and definitely not the best handling

It's not the most efficient, not the most silent and definitely not the best handling but was that what the Camry 2.0E was made for? In short, no it wasn't. Its comfortable, easy to fix, gets you to highways speeds effectively, built like a tank and is a reliable as the name brand it grows from. The fit and finish after 10 years and well over 250,000km is still about the same as the day it was showing 10km the day of receiving the car. Parts broken from ware and tear have been replaced but surprisingly cheaper than some local manufacturer brands would serve up for equivalent repairs. With services every 5000km for the last 4 years and this will keep going. And the comfort level would make you question what are we paying for now days given that a Camry is touching the RM200,000 mark. Considering the 2.0E was the base specified at the time, there is a lot to think about what you get now days. Sure some say better handling and safety but with 10 years of development between the compared pair, is there really a significant improvement being relative to time. Let's talk the handling and performance, or some part there lack off. This was built at a time that a big executive sedan regardless of country of origin, its focus is comfort and getting point A - B in the least stressful manner. Take an Mercedes E-class or BMW 5 series and it's a totally different beast compared to the current equivalent. Big plush seats for front and back, stable chassis for town driving and flat steady highway cruising. That 4 speed auto gets your moving that's for sure and without a doubt you will eventually reach or pass highway speed limits not caring if it's way more 5 seconds. That doesn't phase this "gentleman", he is a reliable butler that will reach your destination and you wouldn't feel stressed or compressed by any bucket seats. The Camry is the total opposite, it will get to cruising speed and all you will hear is a bit of wind noise but nothing the radio wouldn't drown out. Did I mention that being 10 years old, the speakers, radio, air-cond, lighting and other comfort amenities have not been replaced and works the same since day one. The XV40 Camry blends smoothly and coolly into any background but keep it clean and maintained it wouldn't be a sore thumb in any valet parking out in front of a Hotel lobby or have the chauffeur open the "boss" door and wait along side any other luxury brand. Some would say it's an old car but well maintained examples will be evergreen and definitely get respect from any potential future in-laws. When trying to court a young lady, the imagine can be a bit old but forgotten once she sits in it for a long distance trip and the spacious cabin will coax her easily doze off after a long day in the office. Not to forget the boot will easily accommodate her shopping or a aforementioned future in-laws. There are short comings but then which car doesn't, but not all can be deserving enough to claim to be "Old reliable". Not to forget, it will always hold great resale value relative to anything and you will not be shortchanged as it has all the satefy measures you could need like Anti-Lock Brakes, Airbags and 3 point safety belts. If you need more than that then you need to have a check on the speed and style you drive. I know there are things out of our control but you really need to be risking things if you can get a Camry in a trouble. Its not fast, has enough steel to absorb any basic incident and would never be something to canyon carve. Definitely this might be bias but this model of Toyota Camry will be a benchmark to what your next purchase will definitely be. The standards of fit and finish and how it carries on its duty regardless of day and time, just as long you maintain it as scheduled.
