BMW Unveils X5 and X7 M50i Variants – Twin-Turbo V8, 530 hp

Auto News

BMW has taken the wraps of most powerful versions of its X5 and X7 SUV models, dubbed the M50i. In addition to the V8 power plants, both models are equipped as standard with xDrive all-wheel drive systems and model-specific suspension technology co-developed with BMW’s M Division.

At the heart of both SUVs is a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 that produces 530 hp between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm, and a whopping 750 Nm between 1,800 rpm and 4,600 rpm. Several components have been upgraded from the previous (N63) engine version; these include the crankcase, cylinder barrels, pistons, crankshaft, cylinder head, and most importantly larger turbochargers.

All that power is sent to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which is then channeled to all four wheels through the xDrive AWD system. The standard equipment of the new BMW X5 and X7 M50i also includes the electronically-controlled M sports differential which is interconnected to the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system to optimise traction and power transmission.

The X5 M50i is able to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds, the X7 M50i takes 4.7 seconds.

The new BMW X5 M50i is equipped with Adaptive M suspension which offers Comfort and Sport settings, the X7 M50i is fitted as standard with adaptive dual axle air suspension, which is optionally available for the new BMW X5 M50i.

Aesthetically both models carry a number of design features to demarcate them from the rest of the model range, both feature larger air inlets in the front apron, different side sills, and sportier rear apron, while selected design elements are finished in Cerium Grey.

On the inside, both models are fitted M leather steering wheel, a gear selector lever displaying the M logo, Vernasca leather upholstery with contrasting topstitching and interior strips in Aluminium Tetragon (BMW X5 M50i) or Fineline Black wood. Both models also feature illuminated entry sills displaying the ’M50i’ logo. Additionally, the X7 M50i is equipped with a Harman Kardon surround sound system.
