Mazda Trademarks MX-6 Name – Future Sports Car Confirmed?

Auto News

Just late last month Mazda flew a couple journalists to Bangkok for its Mazda ASEAN Design Forum, showcasing the company’s evolution of its Kodo design language, aptly called Kodo 2.0.

At the event, Mazda previewed not one, but two concept models. The first was an upcoming rear-wheel drive full-sized sedan, while the second was the Vision Coupe concept. The event also marked the ASEAN debut of the two concept models.

According to Autoguide, it appears that Mazda might be introducing a new model in the near future, as the publication recently found out that Mazda has filed for a trademark application with the Japanese Patent Office for the “Mazda MX-6” name, which will be used on “automobiles and parts and accessories thereof”. The Hiroshima-based company filed for the trademark on October 16th.

Now, the MX-6 name is not new, as Mazda introduced the first MX-6 back in 1987. That model was also called the Mazda 626 or Mazda Capella C2, depending on the market it’s sold in. The second and last generation of the Mazda MX-6 was introduced in 1991 and Sales of the second generation model lasted until 1997, after which the MX-6 was discontinued without a successor.

Now, as Mazda has just applied for the “MX-6” trademark, could a successor be in the works? Time will tell if Mazda will introduce a new MX-6 in the near future.

Stay tuned.
