The BMW M8 Is On Its Way To Production

Auto News

If you're wondering when BMW was building an M8, we don't blame you. Everything's been a little confusing as the company has been releasing model after model, variant after variant, and just when we're getting used to the 8 Series' return (essentially the successor to the 6 Series, but adopting the 8 Series namesake), we're presented with news of the M8 nearing production.

The car in question is still going through its final checks and testing, shown here at Estoril circuit in Portugal. The formula is fairly similar to the M5, with a meaty twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 pushing a whopping 600 hp and 750 Nm of torque.

Power goes to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission, but similar to the M5 it can also sent power to just the rear wheels if necessary. It's interesting in the sense that it'll be the first two-door M Car with all-wheel drive.

2019 will see the market launch of the BMW M8 in its coupe bodystyle, while the convertible will be coming after. For those who loved the M6 Gran Coupe, the good news is the new M8 will also have a Gran Coupe body style - just that it won't be available at launch.

As you would expect, the M8 benefits greatly from M Division's tweaks in the chassis and suspension department, and it looks like it's going to be quite the weapon on track or on a highway.
