Volvo Car Malaysia Launches S60 T8 R Design PHEV, RM 295,888

Auto News

After much anticipation, Volvo Car Malaysia (VCM) has finally launched their mid-sized luxury sedan offering in the form of the S60 T8 R Design – yes, they’re only offering one trim level and specification for the model, at a very aggressively priced RM 295,888.

Sitting in the Scalable Product Architecture platform that also underpins models like the V90, the S60 is a great leap forward from its predecessor in terms of ride and handling, as well as adopting the most potent powertrain currently available in a Volvo vehicle in the form of the T8 PHEV. A twin-charged 2.0-litre inline 4 engine working in tandem with an electric motor and an 11.6 kWh battery delivers 408 hp and 660 Nm of torque. There’s also an 8-speed automatic transmission that delivers power to the front wheels, while electric drive supplements the rear wheels.

Being an R Design model, it comes with a more aggressive design than the plain-Jane S60s, and this direction for styling has worked very well among Malaysian consumers. Of course, the highlights would literally be the head and tail lights that are instantly recognizable from afar, but the way the 19-inch wheels fill out the arches makes for an undeniably sporty sedan.

On the inside, the R Design treatment continues with a three-spoke leather steering wheel, sport pedals, gear lever, tread plates, and carpets. A Harman Kardon 14-speaker sound system graces your ears, while Apple Carplay and Android Auto functionality allows you to retain your smartphone use through the Sensus Connect entertainment system.

Amenities in the form of keyless entry and start, as well as powered driver and passenger seats all show that Volvo is committed to bringing the highest level of specifications to our market. One of the features you will probably enjoy regularly is the 360-degree Surround View Camera that makes parking an absolute breeze when making sure you’re dead centre in a parking spot.

There are more safety systems than you probably knew existed – everything from City Safety with auto braking, to Pilot Assist which allows for semi-autonomous steering, braking, and acceleration at speeds of up to 130 km/h. It kind of goes without saying at this point that Volvo is the best in the business at keeping occupants out of harm’s way, as well as mitigating potential injury.

There’s not much else you need to know – all Volvo products are great in this day and age, and the S60 certainly doesn’t buck the trend. The only thing that remains is picking the colour of your S60. The only truly vibrant colour available is the Fusion Red Metallic, but muted options range from Onyx Black Metallic, to Pebble Grey Metallic, Birch Light Metallic, and Crystal White Pearl.
