This BYD Dolphin PHEV can go over 1,000km on a single tank & charge
Berita KeretaBYD has unveiled the new Dolphin G DM-i for Europe, introducing a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version of its popular compact hatchback that promises more than 1,000 km of combined driving range.
Unlike the fully-electric BYD Dolphin currently sold in Malaysia, the new Dolphin G DM-i combines a petrol engine with BYD’s Super Hybrid DM technology, allowing it to function like a BEV for daily commutes while retaining the flexibility of a conventional hybrid for longer journeys.
According to BYD, the Dolphin G DM-i can travel more than 1,000 km on a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery, making it one of the longest-range compact hatchbacks in its segment.
The model has been developed specifically for overseas markets, including Europe, where B-segment hatchbacks remain hugely popular. Measuring 4,160 mm long and 1,825 mm wide, the Dolphin G DM-i sits right in the heart of Europe’s supermini category.
While BYD has yet to reveal full technical specifications, the company says the Dolphin G DM-i has been engineered to deliver a BEV-like driving experience thanks to its front-mounted electric motor.
For longer journeys, the hybrid system intelligently switches between electric and petrol power to maximise efficiency and driving range.
BYD says the Dolphin G DM-i is aimed at buyers who want the benefits of electric driving without relying entirely on charging infrastructure, especially in markets where public charging networks are still developing.
The launch is also interesting from a Malaysian perspective. Back in 2023, BYD launched the fully electric Dolphin in Malaysia, positioning it as an affordable entry-level BEV with prices starting from RM99,900.
The EV hatchback quickly became one of the more recognisable electric cars on local roads thanks to its practical size, quirky styling, and competitive pricing.
However, despite the growing adoption of BEVs in Malaysia, range anxiety and charging accessibility remain concerns for many buyers, particularly those who regularly travel long distances. This is where a model like the Dolphin G DM-i could potentially make sense.
At the moment, BYD has only confirmed the Dolphin G DM-i for European markets, with sales set to begin in the coming weeks ahead of first deliveries later this year.
