Got into a car accident? Don't panic, here's Chubb's 5-step guide
InsightsNobody expects to be involved in a car accident, and in the heat of the moment, it's easy to panic. But staying calm and knowing what to do next can make a huge difference, not just for your safety, but also when it comes to filing an insurance claim later on.
To help drivers prepare for the unexpected, Chubb shares five important steps to follow after an accident:
1. Document the accident scene
Before anyone leaves the scene (and only if it's safe to do so), take a few minutes to gather as much evidence as possible.
Snap photos of all vehicles involved from the front, rear and both sides, along with close-up shots of any visible damage. Don't forget to capture road signs, lane markings and the surrounding area, as these can help identify the exact accident location when making a police report. It's also a good idea to record a short video of the entire scene.
2. Exchange only the necessary details
Next, exchange essential information with the other driver. Be sure to collect:
- Full name
- Contact number
- Vehicle registration number
- Motor insurance details
Likewise, only share the same information about yourself. Avoid admitting fault, offering cash settlements on the spot or disclosing unnecessary personal details before the authorities have assessed the situation.
3. Save your dashcam footage and speak to witnesses
If your car has a dashcam, save the footage as soon as possible. Many dashcams overwrite older recordings automatically, so backing up the file immediately could save you a lot of trouble later.
If there were any witnesses, politely ask for their name and contact number. Their account of what happened may prove helpful if there's a dispute.
4. Lodge a police report within 24 hours
In Malaysia, you should file a police report within 24 hours of the accident.
Bring along the photos, videos and any other evidence you've collected, as these can help the investigating officer understand exactly what happened.
5. Send your car for repairs
Once everything has been reported, it's time to get your car repaired.
Take it to your insurer's designated panel workshop and remember to bring your police report together with your insurance policy details to help speed up the claims process.
