BMW E12

The first generation BMW 5 Series (E12) was launched in 1972. The models were initially powered by inline-four engines but were all later switched to straight-six engines. The BMW E12 was initially offered in two models, the BMW 520 and BMW 520i. In 1974, the BMW 518 and BMW 528 models were introduced and motorsport upgrades were available in BMW 530, BMW 530i or BMW 533i. A facelift version of the BMW E12 was introduced in 1976 and the 520 was renamed to BMW 520/6 in line with the change of engine to a straight-six, and the BMW 525 was also made available. The fuel injection version of the 528, the 528i, was introduced in 1978 and the 528 was subsequently discontinued. The M535i was later introduced in 1980 and would become the predecessor of the BMW M5.


 

BMW E28

The second generation BMW 5 Series (E28) began production in 1981 which saw the addition of a diesel engine option and the first BMW M5. The BMW E28 was first launched in four models - BMW 518, BMW 520i, BMW 525i and BMW 528i. Four additional models were later added - 524d and 524td (diesel engine models), 518i (fuel-injected version of the 518), 525e and 528e (fuel economy models) and 533i, 535i, M535i and M5 (higher specification models).


 

BMW E34

The third generation BMW 5 Series (E34) was launched in 1988 and introduced the first all-wheel drive (AWD) and V8 engine for the 5 Series. The E34 was first introduced with the BMW 535i model, and was subsequently followed by the 520i, 530i, 525i and 524td models. The 518i and M5 models were introduced in 1989 while the 525iX and 525tds were introduced in 1991. In 1992, the two Touring models were introduced - 520iT and 525iT. In 1994, the 525td model was introduced and the 535i model was discontinued. The final 540i was introduced in 1995 and production continued up until 1996 despite the introduction of the fourth generation BMW 5 Series.  


 

BMW E39

The fourth generation BMW 5 Series was introduced in 1995 which introduced the first four-cylinder diesel engine in the 5 Series. The E39 was initially introduced in four models - BMW 520i, BMW 523i, BMW 528i and BMW 540i. The first diesel model, the BMW 525td, was introduced in 1996. The M5 and BMW 530d were introduced in 1999. The 520d model was later introduced in 2000 and replaced the existing 525td model. The BMW E39 facelift was launched in 2001 which saw a change in engine from M52TU to M54, and visual enhancements on the 5 Series. 

 


 

BMW E60 

The fifth generation BMW 5 Series was introduced in 2003 and featured significant technological improvements as compared to its predecessors such as the iDrive infotainment system, heads-up display, active cruise control, active steering, adaptive headlights, night vision, lane departure warning and voice control. The petrol engine E60 was first launched in four models - 520i, 525i, 530i and 545i. In 2005, four additional models were added - 523i, 540i, 550i and M5. The 535i and 528i were introduced in 2007. The diesel engine E60 was first launched in only a single model, the 530d. The 535d and 525d were later added in 2004 and the 520d was added in 2005. The facelift or LCI models were introduced in 2007 which featured exterior visual enhancements and significant interior revision. 

 


 

BMW F10

The sixth generation BMW 5 Series was launched in 2010 and is the first of the 5 Series to offer a hybrid drivetrain and a turbocharged V8 engine option. The BMW F10 was launched in Malaysia in two models - the 523i and 535i. The F10 hybrid is equipped with Brake Energy Regeneration, which charges the battery when braking, coasting or decelerating, and Electromechanical steering which reduces energy consumption when pointed straight or at a constant angle. Below are the engine specifications of the petrol BMW F10 5 Series in Malaysia.

BMW G30

The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series was launched in Malaysia 2017 in a single variant - the 530i M Sport. Standard looks of the 530i M Sport include the double kidney grille and L-shaped LED tail lights. It also comes with the M Sport package as standard which includes deeper side skirts, rear valance design with twin trapezoidal exhausts, blue callipers and BMW Individual satin aluminium exterior trim. Additional BMW 5 Series interior for the 530i M Sport features also include 11-colour ambient lighting, 12.3-inch multi-function instrument display, Park Assistant and Harman Kardon surround sound system. The facelifted BMW G30 (G30 LCI) was launched in Malaysia in 2021 in two variants - BMW 530i M Sport and BMW 530e M Sport, both of which are still available for sale by BMW Malaysia. Some exterior upgrades include a more angular double kidney grille, re-shaped headlights with L-shaped daytime running lights and three-dimensional taillights with C-shaped graphics. The M Sport package also adds larger air front intakes, a redesigned rear bumper with contrasting grey bumper insert and trapezoidal tailpipes for the exterior. The interior enhancements include remapped steering wheel controls, gloss black centre console buttons, redesigned seats, revamped 12.3-inch instrument display and a 12.3-inch infotainment system with BMW Operating System 7.0 installed. Both the models come with M Sport steering wheel, M side sill scuff plates, M alloy pedals, power-adjustable sports seats with driver’s side memory, leather upholstery and aluminium trim with black headlining. The M Performance Parts package is optional which includes gloss black grille, rear bumper insert, carbon fibre door mirrors, matte black side stripes, side sills, rear spoiler and diffuser. The BMW 530e M Sport also has an additional option of the Shadow Line package which includes gloss black finish to the grille, side window frames and vents.

BMW G60

The eight generation BMW 5 Series G60, also the latest generation, was first introduced in 2023 and launched in Malaysia in 2024 as a single variant, the all-electric BMW i5 eDrive40. More models such as the mild hybrid are expected to follow sometime within 2024. The i5 has a maximum range of 582 km and can be increased by up to 20% by limiting power. The i5 eDrive40 comes in the M Sport form, which includes sportier bumpers and gloss black trim. The i5 exterior is equipped with 21-inch M Aerodynamic wheels, the BMW Kidney ‘Iconic Glow’, panoramic glass roof, adaptive LED headlights, Adaptive Suspension Pro and Integral Active Steering. The BMW i5 interior is furnished with M leather steering wheel, BMW Individual leather upholstery, M Antharacite headliner and dark silver M accent with aluminium rhombicle trim. The i5 is equipped with 4-zone control automatic air-conditioning, front sport seats with electric adjustment and lumbar support, wireless charging tray, a 12.3-inch instrument display and 14.3-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
