Toyota GR86: The successor to Toyota GT86

The fabled Toyota GT86 was introduced to the world in 2012 and the Toyota GR86 coupe was unveiled in 2021, a faster, lighter rear-wheel-drive four-seat sports car that Toyota claims has retained the GT86's fun-to-drive characteristics but in an updated package. Much like the Toyota GT86, the GR86 is the result of Toyota's collaboration with Subaru in creating compact sports cars. Subaru introduced the new BRZ late last year, and it's confirmed that both cars share the same platform and engine.

The new Toyota 86 boasts enhanced power thanks to Subaru's 2.4-liter four-cylinder horizontally opposed engine, producing 232bhp and 250Nm of torque (a 35bhp and 45Nm increase over its predecessor). This extra power enables the Toyota GR86 to accelerate from 0 to 62mph 1.1 seconds faster than the model it replaces, achieving this feat in just 6.3 seconds. The JDM GR86 will offer a choice of a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox and will incorporate Subaru's 'Eyesight' driver assistance systems.

While the sports car's dimensions closely resemble those of its predecessor, it has managed to shed five kilograms in weight, thanks to the use of aluminum in the roof and body panels. Toyota has also announced that GR86's torsional rigidity has been enhanced by around 50 percent, resulting in even sharper steering and handling.

The new 86 features aerodynamic front and side air ducts, drawing on Toyota's experiences from their Gazoo Racing programs, with the aim of improving the GR86's handling and stability. For those not yet aware, "GR" stands for Gazoo Racing, aligning it with other performance-oriented Toyota models such as the GR Supra and Yaris. While details about the interior are limited, the GR86 is expected to include a seven-inch infotainment screen and an upgraded, driver-focused dashboard design.

2023 Toyota GR86 launched

In 2023, the Toyota GR86 has arrived in Malaysia, and its prices begin at RM295,000. This marks the introduction of the second generation of the coupe, which was jointly developed and manufactured by Subaru in partnership with Toyota. It continues to evolve the concept of a nimble, rear-wheel-drive Japanese two-door car to even more extreme levels, following the debut of the GT86 in 2012.

So, wondering how much is the cost of the new Toyota GR86? Here are the prices and variants of:-

  • 2023 Toyota GR86 - 2.4L - 6-speed manual: Priced at RM295,000
  • 2023 Toyota GR86 - 2.4L - 6-speed automatic: Priced at RM305,000

Although it maintains a similar proportion to its predecessor, the most significant change is the incorporation of a more powerful 2.4-liter naturally aspirated Boxer 4-cylinder engine, producing 237PS at 7,000rpm and 250Nm of torque at 3,700rpm. Compared to the previous-gen 86, the new model provides an additional 35 horsepower and 45 Newton-meters of torque, resulting in a 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.3 seconds, a full 1.1 seconds faster than the outgoing Toyota GT86 that this 'new' GR86 is replacing.

For the observant, the new 86 features aerodynamic front and side air ducts, informed by Toyota's insights from their Gazoo Racing programs, designed to enhance the handling and stability of the GR86. Notably, "GR" stands for Gazoo Racing, aligning it with other performance-oriented Toyota models such as the GR Supra and Yaris.

While the car's dimensions and styling cues closely resemble its predecessor - the Toyota GT86, it has managed to shed five kilograms of weight, partly due to the use of aluminum in the roof and body panels. Toyota has also announced that the GR86's torsional rigidity has been increased by around 50 percent, resulting in even more precise steering and handling. Additionally, the vehicle offers a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission, expected to be the preferred choice, and a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters available for an additional RM10,000. To complete the package, it comes equipped with 18-inch wheels fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tires as standard.
