Nissan and Tan Chong Begin Vehicle Assembly in Myanmar

Nissan and Tan Chong Motor Myanmar (TCMM) announced yesterday that they have officially begun assembling cars in Myanmar, with the first model being the Almera (known as the Sunny in Myanmar).

It is said that the assembly operations will initially use the existing Tan Chong facility which has an annual production capacity of less than 1,000 units per year.

However, as announced last year, a new plant that is much bigger with an annual production capacity of 10,000 units in the region of Bago is expected to be operating in 2019.

Having been selling vehicles in Myanmar since 2013, Nissan has been importing its SUVs, pickup trucks and other products fully from Japan and Thailand prior to this.

With the new and upcoming CKD plants, the company said that it also aims to introduce some of its green and safety technologies to the Myanmar market which is seen as highly potential.

Currently, the Myanmar auto market’s total industry volume (TIV) is about 100,000 units a year, with almost 90 per cent of the vehicles sold being used imports from Japan.

Besides Nissan, other brands that have CKD operations in Myanmar include Toyota, Ford, as well as Suzuki
