2026 GWM Tank 300 HEV previewed in Penang, now open for booking – gains 350 PS/648Nm hybrid powertrain, smart app integration

GWM’s lineup in Malaysia is about to get another electrified upgrade as the Tank 300 HEV officially opens for booking following its appearance at the 2026 Penang Auto Show. Already on sale in Thailand for a few years, the hybrid variant is now making its way here, joining the petrol-powered model that debuted locally in July 2024.

Visually, the hybrid gets its own identity with an exclusive Sand Beige finish, complemented by 17-inch black alloy wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres. Meanwhile, the bright orange paint and larger 18-inch two-tone wheels are now reserved for the ICE variant.

Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but with the petrol version already sitting at around RM250,000, expect the hybrid to command a premium; though it will likely slot below the range-topping Tank 500 HEV.

At the heart of the Tank 300 HEV is a punchy hybrid powertrain that pairs a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine with an electric motor, working through a 9-speed hybrid automatic transmission, one more ratio than the conventional 8-speed box in the ICE version.

The result is a substantial bump in performance, with a combined output of 350 PS and 648 Nm of torque. That’s a significant leap over the standard model’s 220 PS and 380 Nm, giving this electrified off-roader a much stronger shove both on and off the road. Fuel economy numbers are also improved, as you might imagine, thanks to electrification, though official numbers are hard to come by. Clearly, saving fuel isn’t quite the main focus.

Despite the added hybridisation, the Tank 300 HEV doesn’t seem to lose any of its hardcore off-road credentials. It retains a proper 4-wheel drive system complete with front and rear locking differentials. There’s also tank turn functionality, crawl control, and a claimed maximum climbing capability of 66 percent.

Water crossings shouldn’t be an issue either  thanks to a 700 mm wading depth, while the all-terrain system offers seven selectable modes - slightly fewer than the ICE version’s count of nine, but still more than enough for most conditions. Key off-road geometry figures remain unchanged, with approach, departure and ramp breakover angles of 33, 34 and 23 degrees respectively.

Inside, the hybrid model largely mirrors the well-equipped cabin of its petrol sibling. Expect features like automatic climate control with rear vents, powered front seats with a massage function for the driver, faux leather upholstery, and a nine-speaker Infinity sound system.

Tech-wise, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come as standard, along with a sunroof and configurable 64-colour ambient lighting. Safety kit remains a strong point, with a full suite of ADAS features expected, including autonomous emergency braking and adaptive cruise control, alongside six airbags.

However, the HEV does introduce a few extra tricks. Notably, it gains an advanced auto parking function and app connectivity that allows owners to remotely lock or unlock the vehicle, control the windows and sunroof, monitor tyre pressure and temperature, locate the car, and even pre-condition the cabin by switching on the air-conditioning or seat ventilation.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
