2026 Volvo ES90 Ultra Ext Range launched in Malaysia at RM339,888 – CKD electric flagship sedan, 651km WLTP range, 800V tech

After months of spy shots, teasers and not-so-subtle hints about a “Selamat” flagship sedan, Volvo Car Malaysia has finally taken the wraps off its latest EV addition to our market. Meet the new Volvo ES90, a sleek electric crossover sedan that arrives in locally assembled (CKD) guise from the start, making it one of the few premium EVs here to roll out of a Malaysian plant from its local debut.

The ES90 is offered in a single variant, at least for now – the Ultra Single Motor Extended Range  – mirroring the specification already being sold in Thailand. Pricing is set at RM339,888 on-the-road without insurance, which immediately puts it in an interesting position. That figure undercuts its most obvious rival, the likewise now-locally asslembed BMW i5 eDrive40 M Sport Pro, by close to RM30,000, giving Volvo a strong value argument in the executive EV sedan space.

Early adopters are being sweetened with launch incentives too. The first 100 customers who place a booking by March 31st will receive a 2% rebate of the purchase price, worth roughly RM6,800, while corporate and fleet buyers are eligible for an even tastier 8% rebate. The price includes a five-year unlimited mileage vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty and five years of digital services (subscription required thereafter). First deliveries are scheduled to begin in March.

Despite the name, the ES90 isn’t positioned as a simple electric replacement for the outgoing S90. Volvo says the car blends elements of a traditional sedan, a fastback and an SUV. You can see that philosophy in the hatchback/fastback-style tailgate, the relatively short rear overhang and the raised ride height of 181 mm, which gives the ES90 more crossover-like proportions than a conventional three-box sedan.

Under the skin, the ES90 rides on Volvo’s second-generation Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2), the same platform that underpins the larger EX90 SUV. Dimensionally, it stretches to an even 5,000 mm long and 1,942 mm wide, making it slightly shorter but noticeably wider than the BMW i5. Height is a comparatively lofty 1,547 mm, helped by the increased ground clearance, while the long 3,102 mm wheelbase promises generous cabin space, particularly for rear passengers.

Power for Malaysian-spec cars comes from a single electric motor driving the rear wheels. Output is rated at 333 PS (245 kW) and 480 Nm, enough to propel the ES90 from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 6.6 seconds. As with all modern Volvos, top speed is capped at 180 km/h in the name of….keselamatan.

Where the ES90 really flexes its muscles is in the battery and charging department. A 92 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack (88kWh usable) – larger and more energy-dense than the unit in the i5 eDrive40 – delivers an impressive WLTP-rated driving range of up to 651 km, comfortably placing it among the longest-range EVs in its segment.

Just as significant is the adoption of an 800-volt electrical architecture. This allows DC fast charging speeds of up to 300kW, enabling a 10 to 80% top-up in as little as 22 minutes under ideal conditions and a sufficiently rapid charger hookup. AC charging, however, is capped at 11 kW, meaning a full charge on a typical wallbox will take roughly 10 hours. The BMW i5, however, comes with an AC charging speed of 22kW.

Design-wise, the ES90 has already proven to be something of a talking point. While Volvo’s clean, Scandinavian design language is usually a crowd-pleaser, the ES90’s proportions – particularly its pert, high-set rear – have divided opinion. However, in the flesh, we can safely claim the car more than satisfies our own aesthetic sensibilities.

There’s no denying it looks modern and tightly drawn, with crisp lines and smooth surfacing giving it a surprisingly athletic stance, especially on the massive 22-inch two-tone alloy wheels fitted to Malaysian cars wearing shockingly wide Pirelli P Zero tyres (285mm at the rear!).

Up front, Volvo’s latest corporate face is on full display: a smooth, closed-off nose with the signature diagonal slash and Iron Mark, flanked by Thor’s Hammer LED daytime running lights. The main headlamps are arranged vertically at the edges of the fascia, and High-Definition Pixel adaptive headlights are standard. Along the sides, flush door handles and slim mirrors help achieve a respectable 0.25 drag coefficient, while the long glasshouse hints at good rear-seat visibility and space. At the back, EX90-inspired C-shaped taillights frame the tailgate, joined by distinctive vertical light elements beside the rear screen.

Colour choices are limited to Vapour Grey, Crystal White, Denim Blue and Onyx Black, all paired with a Charcoal Nordico interior and blonde birch trim.

Inside, the ES90 embraces Volvo’s ongoing march towards minimalist luxury. Physical buttons are kept to an absolute minimum, with most functions accessed through a nine-inch digital instrument display, a large 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen and a head-up display. A panoramic glass roof is standard, complete with electrochromic dimming to control heat and glare.

The infotainment system runs on Volvo’s Android Automotive-based software with built-in Google services, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Processing power comes from the Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, tied together by Volvo’s “Superstack” software architecture that enables continuous over-the-air updates.

Audio duties are handled by a 25-speaker, 1,610-watt Bowers & Wilkins system with Dolby Atmos support and an Abbey Road Studios listening mode, designed to recreate the acoustics of the legendary London studio.

Practicality is also decent rather than class-leading, likely a by-product of its sleek lines and coupe-inspired fastback silhouette. The powered roof-hinged tailgate opens to a 426-litre boot, expandable to 735 litres with the rear seats folded. There’s also an unremarkably large but usable 22-litre frunk up front for smaller items.

Being the range-topping Ultra variant, Malaysian-spec ES90s come loaded with equipment, including active air suspension, four-zone climate control, ventilated and massaging seats front and rear, power-reclining rear backrests, acoustic glass, a 360-degree camera and park assist. Digital Key Plus allows the car to be accessed via smartphone, alongside a physical key card.

Safety remains a core Volvo strength, hence the ‘Selamat’ marketing campaign. Dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin computers support the latest Pilot Assist Level 2 system with adaptive cruise control, lane centring and curve speed assist. A comprehensive suite of active safety features and nine airbags are standard, though Malaysian cars do without the roof-mounted lidar sensor seen in some overseas markets.

With local assembly, long range, ultra-fast charging capability and a sharp price point, the Volvo ES90 enters Malaysia’s premium EV arena as one of the most compelling and technologically advanced options yet.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
