Geely Galaxy E5 gets bigger 68.4kWh battery, longer range – Proton eMAS 7 update incoming?

Geely is set to further bolster its Galaxy E5 electric SUV - known to Malaysians as the Proton eMAS 7 - by offering it with a new long(er)-range variant which has just surfaced through regulatory filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The highlight of this update seems solely focused on the introduction of a larger 68.39kWh battery pack, which is claimed to boost range to an impressive 610 km range based on the CLTC cycle, a notable 15% increase over the current highest capacity option.

Translating to the globally recognised and more real-world accurate WLTP standard, this new battery would likely provide a range of approximately 450–500 km, making the Galaxy E5 even more competitive among the cutthroat rivalry within compact electric SUVs.

Naturally, the eMAS 7 also stands to benefit significantly from the addition of the newer 68.4 kWh battery, which would bring a longer range to Proton’s locally available EV lineup, where the eMAS 7 is offered in two variants: the Prime, priced at RM109,800, and the Premium, at RM123,800.

Its main local rival is the BYD Atto 3 Ultra, which features a 60.48 kWh battery with 420 km WLTP range and starts at RM123,800. This upgraded battery from Geely, which uses the same Aegis short blade technology, joins the existing 49.52 kWh and 60.22 kWh battery options, which currently offer 440 km and 530 km (CLTC) respectively. In WLTP terms, these equate to about 345 km and 410 km.

Although it remains uncertain whether Geely will retain all three battery configurations for the E5, this new long-range model is clearly designed to address the growing demand for EVs with greater driving distances between charges.

Importantly, the 160 kW (217 PS, 320 Nm) single-motor front-wheel drive setup remains unchanged, continuing to support DC fast charging at 100kW, standard 11kW AC charging, and vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, which allows the car to power external devices at up to 3.3 kW.

From a design standpoint, the updated Galaxy E5 doesn’t appear to have visual difference over the existing version, aside perhaps from subtle tweaks like blacked-out badges. As such, its dimensions also remain unchanged, measuring 4,615 mm long, 1,901 mm wide, and 1,670 mm tall, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase. Buyers can also expect the same 18- and 19-inch alloy wheel options as before.

Since its launch in late 2024, the eMAS 7 has seen strong uptake with 1,738 units registered in Q1 2025, and by April, that number had reached 2,537 units, outperforming the Atto 3, which recorded 727 units over the same period.

With the Galaxy E5 set to receive this significant battery upgrade, it’s hopefully only a matter of time before Proton integrates the same enhancement into the eMAS 7, offering Malaysians a more compelling EV choice with even greater range.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
