Gentari launches AutoCharge in Malaysia, plug-and-charge method skips QR codes and card taps

Gentari is making public EV charging even more seamless with the introduction of AutoCharge, a new feature for its Gentari Go mobile app that allows compatible electric vehicles to begin charging automatically at selected Gentari DC fast chargers, eliminating the need to launch the app, scan a QR code or tap an RFID card.

Available from today, July 1st, the latest update is designed to streamline the charging process and remove friction to offer a more convenient plug-and-charge experience for EV owners. After completing a one-time setup, drivers simply connect their vehicle to a compatible Gentari DC charger, with the system automatically recognising both the vehicle and the user's account before initiating the charge session.

The feature works by securely pairing a registered EV with the user's Gentari Go account. Once linked, future charging sessions at supported DC chargers require no additional authentication, making the experience significantly quicker and more convenient.

Gentari says the rollout will take place in stages across its nationwide DC fast charging network, with priority given to chargers located along major highways and in busy urban centres such as the Klang Valley. The company expects the feature to become increasingly available as more charging sites are upgraded to support AutoCharge.

According to Gentari Chief Green Mobility Officer Fadzrul Ahmad, the introduction of AutoCharge marks another step forward for Malaysia's rapidly evolving EV ecosystem, where improving user convenience is becoming just as important as expanding charging infrastructure.

Importantly, the company confirmed that AutoCharge does not incur any additional fees. Existing charging tariffs, subscription packages and ongoing promotional offers will continue to apply as normal. And to celebrate the launch, the first 500 users who successfully register for AutoCharge and complete their first charging session will receive RM10 in Gentari Go credits.

Beyond the new charging feature, the latest app update also introduces changes to the Gentari Go Rewards programme. Reward points earned on or before June 30, 2026 will remain valid until December 31, 2026. However, points accumulated from July 1 onwards will now carry a validity period of 180 days from the date they are issued.

Security has also received an upgrade. Users must now verify their mobile number before accessing Gentari Go credits, a measure intended to strengthen account protection while providing clearer information on available credit balances and their expiry dates.

Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points across Malaysia. Through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub, users can also access a network of over 18,000 charging points spanning Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India using a single app.

The updated Gentari Go app is now available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Users can update the app, complete the mobile verification process and activate AutoCharge in just a few minutes. Gentari also recommends checking the app or its official website for the latest list of supported EV models, compatible charging stations and setup guidelines.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
