Spyshot: New SUV spotted - could this be the Proton Saga Cross (AMA02)?

A heavily camouflaged Proton test car has been spotted undergoing road testing in Malaysia, sparking speculation that this could be the long-awaited Proton Saga Cross, internally known as the AMA02.

Photos circulating online, credited to Careta, show a compact crossover-shaped vehicle wrapped in camouflage, making it difficult to identify specific styling details.

Its proportions and overall silhouette have led many to believe that this could be Proton's next model built on its new Advanced Modular Architecture (AMA) platform, more specifically, the AMA02.

Last year, Proton confirmed that its new AMA platform would underpin multiple future models beyond the latest Saga. Among them is the AMA02, a compact crossover that has since been widely tipped to carry the Saga Cross nameplate.

If reports prove accurate, the Saga Cross would become Proton's smallest SUV offering, slotting below the X50 and competing directly against models such as the Perodua Ativa, Honda WR-V and Chery Tiggo Cross.

Previous reports also suggest the Saga Cross could utilise Proton's familiar 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine paired with a CVT automatic transmission. Hybrid powertrains have also been mentioned as part of Proton's longer-term product plans, but no specifics have been shared so far.

The AMA02 is aimed to go into production in late 2026, making the appearance of road-going prototypes or test mules a logical next step in its development.

Proton has yet to confirm the identity of the test vehicle, but with testing seemingly underway, we may not have to wait much longer to find out what's hiding beneath the camouflage.
