Toyota Camry Is Now RM7k More Expensive, Priced From RM196.9k

Effective today, the selling price for the all-new Toyota Camry has been raised by RM6,988, bringing the new price to RM196,888 (excluding insurance).

There are no changes to the specifications but from little that we can gather, Toyota is barely making money on the Thailand-assembled Camry. The general public might find this hard to believe but recall in our review of the all-new Camry, the D-segment sedan is an extremely difficult spot to be in right now. Volumes are at an all-time low – which raises the cost for each car - as consumers shift towards SUVs. Compounding the problem further is our weak RM.

Nissan distributor Edaran Tan Chong Motor has given up on the Teana to focus on the X-Trail. The all-new Honda Accord has been launched in Thailand with an equivalent price of RM196,000 so it’s understandable that Honda Malaysia is in no hurry to introduce the model here, which from what we can gather, will be launched in Malaysia in early-2020, price hike included.

Back to the all-new Camry. This all-new model is a substantially more sophisticated product aimed to tempt shoppers of premium sedans like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, especially those who can’t quite accept the downgrade in interior space as they move up the sedan hierarchy.

The Camry also benefits from Toyota’s latest TNGA platform, which allows it to handle better and yet ride more comfortably than any of its in-class rivals. Such a product cannot be cheap.
