Key facts: The 2018 Mercedes-Benz SLC is a spr convertible with an elegant design and a punchy turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Not only is the rear-wheel-drive SLC entertaining to drive, thanks in no small part to its agile handling, it’s good on gas and offers enough trunk space for a weekend getaway’s worth of luggage. Pack heavier, however, and you’ll need to keep the top up. That’s because, when it’s lowered, the retractable hard top takes up about half the available trunk volume.

The SLC 300 comes with a 241 horsepower turbocharged 2.0 Liter four-cylinder engine coupled to a quick-shifting, 9 speed automatic transmission. This is a refined and surprisingly potent powertrain that, according to Mercedes-Benz, needs only 5.8 seconds to accelerate from 0-100km/h.

While we miss having a manual option in Mercedes’s spry little roadster, the automatic used in the SLC is extremely good and never fails to find the right gear. The suspension is taut, and the handling is playful. It might not have the sheer power of the pricier AMG-tuned SLC 43, but the dynamics of the SLC 300 are no less impressive.

Nonetheless, the Mercedes-Benz SLC is a classy and refined way to work on your tan in a nimble luxury convertible.
