The routinely long waits at electric vehicle (EV) charging stations could soon be a thing of the past thanks to a groundbreaking development from automotive giant BYD with the Chinse company unveiling its latest EV architecture, the Super E-Platform, which supposedly promises to make charging an electric vehicle as quick and convenient as refuelling a traditional petrol or diesel car.

Of course, while the technology does hold plenty of potential, it would need an even bigger leap infrastructure to realise this promise.

First of all, the Super E-Platform is built on a cutting-edge 1000V architecture, surpassing the 800-volt technology found in some current BYD models and other cars such as the Porsche Taycan and those built on Hyundai’s E-GMP platform.

400km After 5 Minutes Of Charging

With this innovation, the newest line of BYD cars utilising the platform can support an ultra-fast direct current (DC) charging rate of up to 1000kW, or 1 megawatt (MW), representing a significant jump from the capabilities of existing high-voltage EVs, which can charge at a maximum of 350kW (again, provided the right infrastructure is available).

In contrast, the BYD Seal, which is currently available in markets many export markets, Malaysia included, still operates on a 400-volt platform and maxes out at 150kW for its DC rapid charge input.

Although no commercial chargers currently provide a full 1000kW charge rate, BYD has announced plans to deploy over 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China, an investment that is expected to complement the rollout of the Super E-Platform and support the next generation of fast-charging EVs.

This move is particularly noteworthy, as most BYD owners in China currently rely on third-party charging networks. By establishing its own ultra-fast charging ecosystem, BYD aims to enhance the ownership experience and reduce dependency on external providers.

According to BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu, just a 5-minute charge at 1000kW can add an astonishing 400km of range, equating to over one kilometre of range gained per second of charging, making this the closest EV technology has come to matching the refuelling speed of traditional petrol or diesel vehicles.

BYD conducted tests on its new Han L electric sedan, and results showed that just five minutes on a 1MW charger provided an additional 470 kilometers (292 miles) of driving range. However, given the current lack of 1000kW chargers and vehicles capable of utilising this rate, widespread adoption of this technology is still very much in the horizon.

Expanding EV Lineup

The Super E-Platform is set to debut in two new BYD models—the Han L sedan and the Tang L SUV. Orders for both vehicles have already opened in China, with competitive pricing and impressive performance figures.

The Han L starts at 270,000 yuan (about RM165k) and features a 670hp rear electric motor paired with an 83.2kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. For those seeking even more power, an all-wheel-drive variant with an insane 1,086hp output and an incredible 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 2.7 seconds is available for 350,000 yuan (about RM336k). Interestingly, the base Han L is priced slightly higher than BYD’s range-topping Seal, which starts at 239,800 yuan (or about RM230k) in Chinese markets.

Meanwhile, the seven-seat Tang L SUV shares the same motor configurations as the Han L but is equipped with a larger 100.5kWh battery. Pricing for the Tang L starts at 280,000 yuan (about RM268k) and goes up to 360,000 yuan (RM345k), depending on the chosen variant.    

BYD’s Future Beyond China Comes Into Focus

BYD’s latest innovations are part of a broader strategy to close the gap with Tesla, the global EV market leader. The company sold 1.76 million cars in 2024, just behind Tesla’s 1.79 million. However, 90% of BYD’s sales have been within China, driven largely by its popular hybrid models.

Beyond fast-charging technology, BYD has also introduced a roof-mounted drone launcher compatible with all its vehicles. Developed in collaboration with DJI, this innovative feature allows drones to take off and land while the car is moving at speeds of up to 25 km/h.

Despite BYD’s ambitious advancements, it may be some time before the Super E-Platform vehicles and their supporting infrastructure reach markets outside China. The introduction of 1MW-capable chargers in international regions will depend on local infrastructure development and regulatory approvals.

For now, BYD’s latest breakthroughs position the company at the forefront of EV technology, pushing the industry closer to achieving parity with conventional fuel-powered vehicles. As the automaker continues to expand its global presence, it remains to be seen how quickly these innovations will spread beyond China’s borders.

Three weeks after the launch, Jaecoo commenced delivering the J7 PHEV SUV to dealerships nationwide, sticking to its promised first-quarter delivery schedule.

Jaecoo Malaysia Vice President Emily Lek said the arrival of the first units of the Jaecoo J7 PHEV demonstrates the company's commitment to customers.

To note, the J7 PHEV Premium SUV (2WD) is priced at RM158,800.  All J7 PHEV SUVs come with a seven-year vehicle warranty or up to 150,000km mileage and an eight-year warranty or up to 160,000km mileage on its battery, power motor and power motor controller unit. The eight-year warranty provides a 1 to 1 exchange* when the state of health (SOH) of the battery falls below 70% during the warranty tenure. 

J7 PHEV is currently available in three colours, Khaki White, Carbon Crystal Black and Moonlight Silver. Khaki White will be a highly coveted limited-edition option with only  100 units of its kind in Malaysia,  after which Jaecoo will subsequently introduce an olive grey option.

Built to perform with better fuel economy and seamless power flow between engines, the Jaecoo PHEV roadshow will take place at 1Utama Shopping Centre (GF Luxe) from 27 to 30 March 2025. The public can also learn more about the technology at the Jaecoo roadshow.

After making a debut in less than a month, Denza Malaysia has hit the ground running with the EV MPV Denza D9, as 200 units have been delivered to customers in Malaysia.

For recap, Denza is a sub-brand under BYD and Denza D9 is an all-electric seven-seater MPV with a range of up to 600km, a sleek design, and a spacious cabin. It features a state-of-the-art infotainment system, intelligent voice control, smart connectivity, and a DiSus adaptive damping system.

In Malaysia, the Denza D9 is priced at RM259,000 for the advanced model and RM309,000 for the premium model. Both variants are equipped with a 103.36kWh LFP battery that supports up to 11kW AC charging and up to 166kW of DC fast charging.

The public can check out and test drive the Denza D9 at Plaza Arkadia, Desa ParkCity, this weekend. The event will also showcase the Denza Z9 GT with special “crab walk” demos.

It was not too long ago that the world mourned the farewell of the second-generation Audi R8, with speculation swirling that Audi might abandon the supercar market altogether. Since then, Audi has faced declining sales figures, raising concerns that more models could be discontinued if the company doesn’t make changes. However, a new report suggests there may still be light at the end of the tunnel.

Gernot Döllner, CEO of Audi, recently hinted that the Audi Board and its parent company, Volkswagen Group, have agreed on a strategy to transition to an all-electric lineup by expanding plug-in hybrid models. This decision opens up a wide range of possibilities, and Döllner believes there’s no better place to start than with a low-volume, high-performance halo car.

Back in the early 2000s, Audi saw massive success in rallying and particularly in Le Mans. Audi entered the LMP900 class and won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005, making it one of the most dominant runs in Le Mans history. The car responsible for this was the R8 LMP. With this generational run, Audi strengthened its presence in international racing, which paved the way for the creation of a road-legal supercar, the R8.

The development of the Audi R8 began in the early 2000s, following the acquisition of Lamborghini by the Volkswagen Auto Group. To reduce the costs of developing the Lamborghini Gallardo and bring Audi closer to its German competitors, plans for Audi's first-ever mid-engined supercar were set into motion through the collaboration of Lamborghini and Audi. Geely Auto has recently nveiling its EX5 all-electric SUV in the Oceania region. The launch marks the brand's entry into the Australian and New Zealand markets, signifying a bold expansion of its international footprint.

CEO of Geely Auto Group, Jerry Gan, said that by the end of this year, Geely will reach markets including the UK, Brazil, and South Africa, adding more than 300 new sales and service outlets and bringing its international channel layout to more than 1,100.

When you think of a 6-wheeled car, most people would immediately associate that layout with the iconic Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6x6,

This unique 6-wheeled Jimny was recently spotted on the Historics Auctioneers website and has since sparked a wave of interest across the internet. The owner, inspired by online renditions of the Jimny in 6x6 form, thought, "Why not?" and decided to make it a reality.

The Suzuki Jimny in question began life as a standard JDM Jimny, imported to the UK. It was then handed over to Mocho Fabrications, where the ambitious conversion began. A custom rear bed and new rear arches were crafted specifically for this project, along with a third axle sourced from another donor Jimny. Yes, that's right – two Jimnys were used to create this eye-catching 6-wheeler. Fans of Audi may also recognize the custom Nardo Grey finish, adding a touch of German luxury to this quirky off-roader.

Further upgrades include an upgraded Kenwood Apple CarPlay system, plush leather upholstery, and brand new all-terrain tires, complete with two spare wheels. However, while the third axle looks the part, it's not actually functional, which technically makes this a 6x4 Jimny rather than a true 6x6.

Stellantis Malaysia launch Subang service centre, Desa Park City showroom by Allure Auto 

Stellantis Malaysia has launched a new service centre for Peugeot and Leapmotor at Subang and multi-brand showroom at Desa Park City by Allure Auto. 

These new facilities will serve the dealership’s network across Subang Jaya, Old Klang Road, and Desa Park City at Kuala Lumpur. 

The Subang service centre is the first facility to house a Peugeot service centre and a Leapmotor Hub for high-voltage advanced electric vehicle maintenance under one roof. Spread across a 5702 sqft built-up area, the facility features two delivery bays and six dedicated car service bays. 

Customers will benefit from comprehensive aftersales solutions, including spare parts, servicing, and warranty support delivered by a team of five Stellantis-certified technicians and service advisors, with the added assurance of 24/7 careline for prompt technical assistance.
