The announcement of the 2022 Mazda CX-5 facelift was made in late 2021, revealing a refreshed exterior, an updated list of features, and chassis improvements.

The redesigned Mazda CX-5 SUV is easily recognizable by its new front fascia, showcasing revamped headlamps with rectangular LED lighting elements. These flank a modified grille with a three-dimensional mesh insert, accompanied by a thicker signature wing that no longer extends as far into the clusters as before.



Mazda's designers opted for a cleaner look by reducing the number of character lines in favor of a reflective body surface, resulting in a simplified lower apron. The rear taillights now mirror the light signature of the headlamps, with smaller reflectors positioned higher above the exhaust pipes. The facelift introduces new aluminum alloy wheel designs, along with a fresh exterior color named Zircon Sand.

The application of aspects from Mazda's SkyActiv-Vehicle Architecture, initially introduced in the Mazda 3, contributes to enhanced ride comfort, reduced fatigue, and significantly less road noise in the Mazda C X5. The suspension undergoes improvements with an enhanced dampening control structure and increased frame rigidity, effectively suppressing unpleasant NVH.

Inside, the Mazda CX 5 car retains familiarity but introduces a notable addition—a Qi wireless charging tray located in the center console. Drivers can utilize the new Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) system, offering various drive modes. Models equipped with the i-Activ all-wheel drive system gain an Off-Road mode.

The larger 10.25-inch infotainment screen, introduced in a previous update, remains a feature. Trim, upholstery, and contract stitching combinations vary based on the market and offered variants.

For the United States market, Mazda announced that all CX 5s will come standard with all-wheel drive for the 2022 model year. Powertrain details are not extensively provided, but it appears that the existing SkyActiv engines will persist. Car and driver report the most potent option as a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder petrol unit, delivering 250 hp and 434 Nm on premium fuel or 227 hp and 420 Nm on regular fuel.

A less powerful option is a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated four-cylinder petrol with 187 hp and 252 Nm, both paired with a responsive six-speed automatic transmission.

In European markets, additional engine options include a 2.0-liter NA four-cylinder petrol (163 hp and 213 Nm) and a 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel (up to 181 hp and 445 Nm). Front- and all-wheel drive options should be available outside the United States.

In terms of safety and driver assistance, the i-Activsense suite is updated to include Cruising & Traffic Support (CTS), aiding in reducing driver fatigue during traffic jams. The front Adaptive LED Headlights (ALH) have also been improved for finer control over light distribution. Returning systems include Blind Spot Monitoring, Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning System, Lane-keep Assist System, Smart City Brake Support, Smart Brake Support, and Driver Attention Alert.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Malaysia coming soon?

Mazda CX-5 enthusiasts eager for the facelifted model will need to exercise a bit more patience, as shared by Bermaz, the brand custodians. In a past radio interview, Dato Francis Lee, CEO of Bermaz Auto Berhad, indicated that significant launches, particularly a new Mazda CX-5, are not on the agenda for the year 2023.

Looking ahead, Lee revealed, "Going forward, we have other car launches, which is not significant," clarifying that noteworthy launches, like the anticipated new Mazda CX-5, are not slated for this year. Instead, he emphasized that facelifted models are scheduled for release in 2024.

"In 2024, there will be new facelifts and so on for some of our other models. We are now concentrating on the three main bread-and-butter models, which are our CKD (locally-assembled) models; Mazda CX 5 2024, CX-8, and CX-30," Lee explained. These three models, he emphasized, constitute the core of their future volume.

Addressing current waiting times for their vehicles, Lee mentioned they range from "1 to 2 months." He attributed the demand to the Inokom plant in Malaysia, responsible for assembling Mazda cars, running at nearly full capacity.
