Mazda MX-5 Made its Malaysian Debut in 2015

The Mazda MX-5 made its official debut in Malaysia in 2015, priced at RM226,376. The sports car is powered by a new 2-liter Skyactiv engine, with a lighter build and improved positioning for enhanced center of gravity. The engine delivers 158hp at 6,000rpm and 200Nm of torque at 4,000rpm, maintaining a rear-wheel-drive setup with an exclusive automatic transmission.

Utilizing Skyactiv lightweight construction, the Mazda MX-5 Miata sheds weight, becoming the lightest version since 1989 at 1,080kg. Design improvements include reducing front overhang by 45mm, wheelbase by 20mm, and rear overhang by 40mm, while lowering the roofline by 10mm. It retains a 50:50 weight distribution and double-wishbone front suspension.

The i-Activsense features include an adaptive front-lighting system, high beam control, and a lane departure warning system, making the Mazda MX-5 a standout option in the market.

2017 Mazda MX-5 RF Launched In Malaysia

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 RF was introduced with two different engine options: a 2.0-liter SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine that generates 200 Nm of torque and 158 horsepower for the rear wheels. Mazda offers two transmission options: the SkyActiv-MT six-speed manual and the SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic, both of which provide power to the rear wheels.

Both variants have the following important features:

  • Power retractable roof
  • MZD Connect infotainment system with 7-inch display
  • Leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel
  • Cruise control
  • Engine Push Start button
  • Smart Keyless Entry system
  • Leather upholstery
  • Automatic air conditioning
  • LED headlights with auto on/off
  • Automatic headlight leveling
  • Daytime running lights
  • ABS with EBD, DSC, and TCS
  • Four airbags
  • I-Activesense

The manual Mazda MX-5 RF is priced at RM242,717 back in 2017, while the automatic variant costs RM248,182. On-the-road (OTR) costs include insurance in both cases.

Updated 2019 Mazda MX5-RF

The Mazda MX-5 RF entered Malaysia in 2019, showcasing an array of enhanced features and increased power.

The Mazda MX5 Roadster, available in two versions—the Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0L M/T and Mazda MX-5 RF 2.0L A/T—was priced at RM 259,154 and RM 260,354 (without insurance), respectively. This marked an approximate RM33,000 price increase over the RM227,277 price tag of the previous model.

The significant update revolved around the revised 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine, which delivered 184 PS and 205 Nm of torque. This represented a substantial improvement over the previous iteration by 24 PS and 5 Nm. Additionally, Mazda's engineers optimized the torque curve, resulting in a more significant torque output across the entire rev range. The Mazda MX-5 RF's engine was notable for having a higher rev limit, reaching 7,500 rpm, up 700 rpm from before. The engine could be paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed SkyActiv-Drive automatic gearbox.

Alongside the engine upgrades, the Mazda Connect infotainment system offered Apple Car Play and Android Auto as standard features on the Mazda MX 5 Car in RF variant. The updates also extended to the aesthetic realm, featuring new black-metallic 17-inch wheels across both variants and the inclusion of a telescopic steering wheel with 42mm of travel.

Mazda MX-5 RF Gets Spec Bump For 2022

The most recent version of the popular Mazda MX 5 roadster, now available as a Retractable Fastback, has minor specification changes and will start at RM264,029 for the model with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The almost identical Mazda MX5 car will set you back RM265,964 if you choose the 6-speed automatic version. This amount includes an extra RM1,935, which is used to cover the ongoing 50% SST discount on new fully imported cars.

It's important to note that this version costs RM21,000 more than when it was first released in Malaysia at the same time in 2017. Not much has changed specifically for 2022, but then again, why change what wasn't broken?

It looks the same as the last update, with 17-inch wheels, adaptive LED headlights, and a recognizable folding metal roof. Keyless entry (and start) opens up the cozy cockpit, which has leather upholstery, cruise control, and a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that makes use of the outdated MZD Connect interface.

Kinematic Posture Control (KPC)

A feature that Mazda debuted in late 2021, is a noteworthy addition. Despite the name's potential euphemism, G-Vectoring Control Plus technology has evolved to improve handling and dynamic responsiveness, especially during aggressive driving. In contrast to GVC+, it manages body roll and provides a more consistent steering feel in high-G situations by applying mild braking force to the inner rear wheel.

The main advantage is the ability to achieve comparable improvements without sacrificing ride comfort or refinement by eschewing stiffer suspension components. Beyond this, the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF specifications mirror its predecessor, unless there's something overlooked.

Specifications for the 2022 Mazda MX-5 RF

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 RF's specifications state that its 2.0-liter naturally aspirated SkyActiv-G four-cylinder petrol engine will still provide 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 205 Nm of torque at 4,000 rpm. Even with a manual curb weight of only 1,111 kg, the engine is still quite powerful. Mazda hopes to improve fuel efficiency with features like idle stop-start and the i-ELOOP brake-energy recovery system.

In addition to passive safety equipment like six airbags and anti-lock brakes, the vehicle is equipped with safety features like Blind Spot Monitoring, Lane Departure Warning, Driver Attention Alert, and Smart City Brake Support (SCBS or AEB, front and rear). Deep Crystal Blue, Jet Black, Machine Gray, Polymetal Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, and Soul Red Crystal are the available exterior color options that have not changed.

Possible EV Mazda MX-5 for 2026?

Mazda has officially confirmed that the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata will undergo electrification, marking a pivotal moment for this iconic sports car. While the exact method of electrification remains undisclosed, the move aligns with Mazda's broader plan to partially electrify its entire lineup by 2030. The Mazda MX-5 Miata, known for its thrilling performance and affordability, is considered a crucial candidate for electrification to ensure its relevance in the evolving automotive landscape.

Mazda is actively developing electric vehicle technology, and the next-gen Mazda Miata is expected to debut with a hybrid or plug-in hybrid version before a fully electric variant.

Considering the challenges of fitting a battery within the compact Miata frame, a hybrid version seems a logical choice. The anticipated release date for the 2026 Mazda MX-5 Miata is set for the top-down driving season of 2025, representing an electrifying future for this beloved roadster.
