2016 Proton Persona Receives 5-Stars From ASEAN NCAP

The all-new Proton Persona receives a safety rating of 5 stars by the New Car Assessment Program for South East Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) on the day of its launch. The rating is given as an extension of the 5-star rating awarded to the Proton Iriz earlier and is applicable to all variants of the Persona on sale in the Malaysian market.

In a statement released by ASEAN NCAP, it was clarified that, ‘as the Persona is the sedan version of Iriz, with comparable occupant protection to the Iriz, ASEAN NCAP is extending the rating of Proton Iriz to the Persona. This move was adopted as ASEAN NCAP feels the volume of the car is not yet available to justify the test.’

The statement nevertheless added that as the Persona’s volume grows in the market, ASEAN NCAP might consider subjecting the vehicle to an actual crash test.

“Although the Persona is an extended rating, ASEAN NCAP had verified the results by examining the crash data from the development test by Proton at MIROS PC3 and comparing it with Iriz’s crash data. As such, all variants of the new Persona are awarded with 5-Star ASEAN NCAP,” said ASEAN NCAP Chairman, Prof Dr Wong Shaw Voon.

According to the official ASEAN NCAP results, the Persona scored 14.07 out of 16.00 points for adult occupant protection, qualifying it for a 5-star Adult Occupant Protection rating. In the area of child occupant protection, the Persona scored 82%, qualifying it for a Child Occupant Protection rating of 4 stars.

In addition to its all but identical frontal structure, all variants the Persona also receive the same level of active and passive safety equipment that includes dual frontal airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), seatbelt reminders for both front occupants, and ISOFIX mounts with top tethers for child restraints. Higher-spec variants additionally get side and curtain airbags.

The Persona’s commendable democratization of safety across its entire line-up ensures that its ASEAN NCAP rating are similarly applicable to all variants without exception.
