Apple CarPlay Ultra debuts, but for some reason Aston Martin gets it first, Porsche coming next

Apple’s next-generation CarPlay experience, teased as far back as 2022, but known as CarPlay Ultra, is officially making its debut—and luxury performance carmaker Aston Martin is the first to bring it to the road following some time in the oven for fine tuning between Gaydon and Cupertino.

New orders of the DBX, Vantage, DB12, and Vanquish will come equipped with CarPlay Ultra as standard with even xxisting Aston Martins featuring the brand’s most recent infotainment system hardware, introduced with the 2024 DB12, is confirmed to receive the feature via a dealer-installed software update in the coming weeks.

CarPlay Ultra will still require a fairly new iPhone (12 or newer) to operate as a companion device, running iOS 18.5 or later. The rollout begins in the U.S. and Canada, with a global expansion expected within the next year. If you've got an Android phone then, well, you'll have to 'make do' with the standard Aston Martin user interface.

CarPlay Ultra represents a significant leap forward in Apple’s automotive ambitions; well, besides making an actual car. Unlike the previous version, which was limited to the central infotainment display, this new iteration extends Apple’s interface across all digital displays in the vehicle—including the instrument cluster. This means core driving information such as the speedometer, tachometer, fuel level, and temperature are now presented - for better or worse - in Apple’s signature aesthetic.

As mentioned, this isn't a one-size-fits-all solution with Apple working closely with Aston Martin’s design team to ensure CarPlay Ultra retains at least some of the British the carmaker’s brand cues. Custom themes, visual layouts, and interface elements have been carefully crafted to reflect Aston Martin’s luxury brand identity, offering drivers a tailored experience. Users can also personalize colors, themes, and wallpapers to suit their preferences. However, it underscores the core point of friction of CarPlay Ultra, the potential ceding of all digital UX elements in the car to Apple, which is something automakers are not willing to relinquish.

One of the most transformative aspects of CarPlay Ultra is its deep integration with vehicle functions. It effectively replaces the car’s original interface, giving drivers control over everything from the radio and climate settings to performance and chassis modes, seemingly without limit over how deep this integration can go, though there are some physical controls that remain for more essential functions such as climate control, gear selection, and exhaust settings, allowing users to choose between touch, voice (via Siri), or physical input.

CarPlay Ultra also introduces Apple widgets that can be placed on both the main infotainment screen and the instrument cluster, allowing for at-a-glance updates and greater customization. The goal is to provide a seamless and immersive experience that keeps drivers connected and in control without leaving Apple’s familiar interface.

Initially, CarPlay Ultra was expected to launch in 2024, but delays pushed its debut into 2025. Besides Aston Martin, Porsche is another brand working with Apple, though a rollout timeline hasn’t been confirmed, but it seems like the majority of automakers haven't lined up to lock arms with Apple.

As more automakers evaluate the wider customer response to CarPlay Ultra, its future adoption could mirror the widespread success of the original CarPlay, which has become somewhat ubiquitious as an add-on or alternative mode of smartphone connectivity in cars, but we all also remember just how resistant automakers were even to original interation of CarPlay and Android Auto.

Meanwhile, Google has taken a wholly different approach as their next-generation automotive connectivity solution, offering Android Automotive up as a full-on operating system replacement that negates the need for a smartphone at all. Examples of this include multiple models of the newest Volvos such as the EX90 and EX30.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
