Smart Concept #2 breaks cover – previews compact EV with nearly 300 km range

Smart has officially taken the wraps off the Concept #2, giving us a preview of its upcoming all-electric #2. Think of it as a modern take on the ForTwo, which ran through three generations from 1998 to 2024, and a return to Smart’s small car roots.

This new two-seater city car is penned by the Mercedes-Benz global design team, built around a “Function becomes Fashion” theme that leans heavily on individuality.

You can see that in the design, with its bold proportions, matte white and warm gold two-tone finish, and premium touches like leather detailing.

At first glance, it does look like a fresh reinterpretation of the ForTwo. That said, as with most concept cars, expect the production version to be toned down a fair bit.

Underneath, the #2 will sit on Smart’s new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA). It measures 2,792 mm long, which is just about 25 mm longer than the last-generation ForTwo. True to its city car roots, it also boasts a tight 6.95-metre turning radius, making it ideal for tight urban spaces.

There are no interior photos yet, but based on the wheels-at-the-corners layout, it should offer a surprisingly roomy cabin for its size.

Details on the powertrain and battery are still limited for now, but Smart is targeting an estimated range of close to 300 km. That’s decent for a city-focused EV, although it still falls short of other compact EVs like the MINI Cooper SE and Renault 5 EV, both of which offer around 400 km (WLTP).

On the charging front, the #2 supports DC fast charging, with a 10% to 80% charge taking under 20 minutes. It will also come with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability.

Smart says the production version of the #2 will debut at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, so more details should surface closer to that.

In Malaysia, Smart currently offers:

  • #1 (from RM169,000)
  • #3 (from RM175,000)
  • #5 (from RM199,800)

While I wouldn’t label myself a hardcore petrolhead, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for cars and the simple joy of driving. For me, getting behind the wheel is a therapeutic escape.
