All-New 2018 Land Rover Discovery Officially Launched, RM 729,800

Following on from a preview or two late last year, Jaguar Land Rover Malaysia has finally launched the all-new Land Rover Discovery. The 7-seater model has long been due for an update, and with this generation comes an all-new monocoque body sitting on an all-new platform that's lighter and stronger than ever. The weight savings through the extensive use of aluminium have resulted in a 480 kg weight reduction over the previous model.

But such is the nature of Land Rover's products as they shed the weight of the past - in both figurative and literal terms. Of course there are other improvements, in terms of powertrain and features. The single powertrain option for Malaysia is the Td6 - a 258 PS, 3.0-litre V6 turbodiesel engine, with 600 Nm of torque on tap. Paired with a ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox, the Discovery can sprint to 100 km/h in just 8.1 seconds - not that it really matters in this class.

As you would expect of a proper Land Rover vehicle that can live up to the badge, the Discovery is packaged with a host of off-road oriented equipment. Things like a two-speed transfer box with high and low ranges and a 50-50 torque split for the front and rear axles, a four-corner air suspension system that provides additional ground clearance without compromising on-road manners, and your standard Land Rover terrain control modes.

The styling has maintained some elements but evolved in certain ways as well. A powered inner tailgate adds a touch of class to a practical mainstay for split-tailgate cars. The design on the whole has changed slightly to become a little sleeker and more sculpted with modern Land Rover design cues. A faster windscreen angle break up front changes the overall silhouette but makes for better aerodyamics and a sleeker profile.

On the inside, perhaps the largest changes are found with the entertainment unit, being a 10-inch high-resolution display. Land Rover's products have always struggled with interior pieces but this one looks to be a winner. The rotary shift selector from other Land Rover products also makes an appearance here. All-in, the Land Rover Discovery is going for RM 729,800, inclusive of GST, but without road tax, insurance, or registration.
