MAA: Malaysia’s 2026 vehicles sales shot up 17% in April, bolstered by new model launches

Malaysia’s automotive industry continued its strong run into the second quarter of 2026 with new vehicle sales posting a healthy double-digit increase in April as production recovered from the festive season slowdown and fresh model launches drew buyers into showrooms.

According to the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA), total industry volume (TIV) for April 2026 reached 72,113 units, representing a 17% jump compared to the 61,807 units recorded in the same month last year.

The April figure was also 14% higher than March’s 63,489 units, marking the second consecutive month of growth for the local automotive sector. MAA attributed the rebound to higher production volumes following the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday season, coupled with stronger market demand generated by newly launched models that were highly publicised.

Passenger vehicles remained the key driver behind the growth surge as sales in the segment climbed 19% year-on-year to 67,893 units, up from 57,231 units recorded in April 2025. Commercial vehicles, however, moved in the opposite direction, declining 8% to 4,220 units from 4,576 units previously.

Production numbers also reflected the industry’s recovery momentum. Total vehicle output in April rose 25% year-on-year to 70,611 units, compared to 56,602 units a year earlier. Passenger vehicle production accounted for 66,351 units, while commercial vehicle production stood at 4,260 units.

Despite the strong performance last month, cumulative figures for the first four months of the year paint a more measured picture. Between January and April 2026, total vehicle sales edged up 2% to 254,318 units from 250,239 units in the corresponding period in 2025. Passenger vehicle sales rose 2% to 238,418 units, while commercial vehicle sales slipped 2% to 15,900 units.

Meanwhile, cumulative vehicle production for the same period fell 2% year-on-year to 229,988 units. Looking ahead, MAA expects market momentum to remain positive in May, supported by sustained consumer demand and continued contribution from recently launched models.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
