MG continues rapid growth in Malaysia with 39% Q1 sales surge, more 3S centres planned

Just two years after entering the Malaysian market, MG Motor Malaysia appears to be gaining serious momentum. The SAIC Motor-owned brand celebrated its 2nd anniversary in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month while simultaneously announcing strong sales performance for the first quarter of 2026.

According to the company, MG recorded a 57% increase in sales compared to Q4 2025, while year-on-year growth versus Q1 2025 stood at an impressive 39%. The brand attributes the upward trajectory to growing customer confidence, increased product awareness, and the successful introduction of the locally assembled MG S5 EV.

Speaking at the event, SAIC Motor Malaysia managing director Emory Qi described the start of 2026 as a significant milestone period for the company, particularly with the rollout of the CKD S5 EV programme in Malaysia. He added that MG remains committed to expanding its local footprint through stronger customer engagement, localisation efforts, as well as a broader dealer and aftersales network.

That expansion strategy is already taking shape. MG confirmed that new 3S centres will soon open in Kuantan and Rawang, further strengthening the brand’s growing nationwide presence. The company is also putting heavy emphasis on aftersales support, an area where many newer automotive brands often face scrutiny.

Notably, MG currently operates 11 body and paint facilities across Malaysia, a relatively substantial number considering the brand’s relatively brief time in the local market. The move signals a clear intention to reassure customers about long-term ownership support and repair accessibility.

The anniversary event also saw confirmation that Malaysia-assembled left-hand-drive versions of the MG S5 EV will soon be exported to South America from EPMB’s Pegoh plant in Melaka. Launched last month, the rear-wheel-drive EV now packs 205 PS and 350 Nm, while offering up to 446 km of WLTP-rated range, all from RM117,528 before insurance.

There's just something about cars. It's a conveyance, it's a liability, it's a tool; but it can also be a source of joy, pride, inspiration and passion. It's much like clothes versus fashion. And like the latter, the pursuit of perfection never ends.
