Meet the IM6: a sleek, high-performance electric SUV that could potentially serve as the brand’s flagship EV in Southeast Asia. Unlike the S5 EV, which goes head-to-head with the likes of the BYD Atto 3, Proton eMAS 7, the IM6 moves up a class, making its natural rivals the BYD Sealion 7, Xpeng G6, and perhaps even the Zeekr 7X, although the MG makes an immediate statement simply through its sheer size, though it masks it well. Measuring 4,904 mm in length and 1,988 mm in width, the IM6 boasts a larger footprint than both of its key competitors. The generous 2,950 mm wheelbase is also 20 mm longer than that of the Sealion 7, promising ample cabin space for passengers. Practicality hasn’t been overlooked either, with the rear cargo area offering 596 litres of boot capacity, expanding to an impressive 1,571 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Up front, there’s also a handy 32-litre frunk for storing charging cables or smaller items. Design-wise, the IM6 certainly isn’t lacking in character with its flowing, curvaceous bodywork giving it a softer and more elegant appearance compared to the sharper lines seen on some rivals. The rear end is perhaps its most striking angle, featuring styling cues reminiscent of the Aston Martin DBX thanks to its continuous and sweeping light bar. Certain details, such as the wheel design, may draw comparisons to other models on the market, but viewed as a whole, the IM6 manages to establish a distinctive identity of its own. It’s a refreshing alternative to the more conservative approach taken by the Sealion 7 and the futuristic, spaceship-inspired aesthetic of the Xpeng G6. Underneath the sculpted bodywork lies some serious firepower. In other markets such as Thailand where the IM6 was previously shown, there’s an entry-level Premium RWD variant is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor producing 295 PS (217 kW) and 450 Nm of torque. Those figures allow the sizeable SUV to sprint from 0-100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds. Energy comes from a 75 kWh lithium-ion NMC battery pack, with MG quoting a driving range of up to 450 km based on the WLTP testing cycle. Charging capabilities are respectable too. The Premium RWD supports AC charging at up to 11 kW and DC fast charging at rates of up to 153 kW. It also comes with a 6.6 kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, allowing owners to power external devices and appliances directly from the car. For those who find the standard model a little too sensible, the range-topping Performance AWD turns the IM6 into something of a super-SUV. By adding a second motor to the front axle, total system output jumps to a staggering 786 PS (572 kW) and 803 Nm of torque. The result is a 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 3.48 seconds, territory usually reserved for exotic performance machinery. The flagship model also receives a larger 100 kWh NMC battery, extending the claimed WLTP range to 600 km. Charging performance takes another leap forward, with support for 22 kW AC charging and ultra-fast DC charging at up to 396 kW. MG claims a 10-80% recharge can be completed in under 20 minutes under ideal conditions. Top speed is rated at 239 km/h, comfortably exceeding the 200 km/h capability of the rear-wheel-drive version. The IM6 Performance AWD comes fitted with adaptive air suspension capable of adjusting ride height automatically depending on the selected driving mode. Drivers can choose between the standard setting, a raised position offering an additional 20 mm of ground clearance, or a lowered stance that drops the body by 50 mm for improved aerodynamics and handling. Further enhancing agility is a four-wheel steering system, though this isn’t yet confirmed for the Malaysian market, while stopping power is provided by disc brakes paired with eye-catching orange Continental brake calipers. Wheel sizes differ between variants, with the Premium RWD riding on 20-inch alloys and the Performance AWD receiving sportier-looking 21-inch black-finished wheels (pictured). Inside, the IM6 presents itself as a thoroughly modern premium SUV. Standard equipment is extensive, including acoustic glass throughout the cabin for improved refinement, a panoramic glass roof, flush door handles, a hands-free powered tailgate, NFC key card access and synthetic leather upholstery covering sofa-like seats designed with comfort in mind. The front seats are particularly well appointed, featuring 8-way power adjustment and lumbar support for the driver, 6-way adjustment for the front passenger, and ventilation for both occupants. Dominating the dashboard is a massive 26.3-inch display that serves as the focal point of the cabin’s digital experience. Additional equipment includes a surround-view camera system, a 20-speaker premium audio setup, 256-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control with a PM2.5 air filtration system, rear air vents and wireless smartphone charging. Naturally, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, alongside a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems. While Malaysian pricing and indeed the local presence of the IM brand has yet to be fully detailed, the MG IM6 Premium RWD in neighbouring Thailand is priced from 1.399 million baht (approximately RM180,000), while the Performance AWD commands 1.799 million baht (around RM232,000). With the MG S5 EV already earmarked for the Malaysian market, the arrival of the IM6 would give the brand a genuine flagship offering in the growing EV space, especially if MG can ramp up CKD operations with local assembly partners EPMB in Melaka to accommodate the IM6 before long. The fact that the model is already available in right-hand-drive form only adds weight to this possibility. The question now is whether Malaysian buyers are ready for another large Chinese electric SUV. On paper at least, the IM6 appears to have all the ingredients: eye-catching design, cutting-edge technology, genuine performance credentials and an equipment list that rivals luxury brands costing significantly more. If MG decides to bring it here, and prices it right, the established players may have yet another formidable challenger to worry about. ✕ Let's Connect on Whatsapp We protect your personal information in compliance with the PDPA I agree with Carlist.my Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
